v 16.0 destroying video recordings

I am finding that video clips I take look great from my computer but I import them into movie studio and they instantly become grainy to the point they are barely recognisable as having been taken with a decent camera. This isn't even a problem with the videos, as trying them on a mac and with the basic editor produces zero problems. I just need to use a windows machine for work!

Further still, I went to add text overlay, just to soldier on and see if things would pan out, and it looks like text from an 80s video game.

What am I missing as it feels like I must be doing something drastically wrong for it to be this bad? As it is I'd be better off buying a VHS recorder then recording that off my phone before uploading to youtube, it's terrible!

Any ideas?

Vegas downscales preview quality in order to keep playback smooth. Your computer probably can't keep up with smoothly playing back the file on the timeline, so Vegas drops the quality of the preview output to keep the framerate high. You can change it back by clicking on the area indicated in the picture below and setting it to (preview - full), (good - full), and (best - full).

I did this and it did improve the video quality for a one off view, so that was good. But it still heavily pixellates the text. I've been trying to retry but the program is crashing and won't let me in now. Will report back if I manage to make it work, at least that helped get the video looking a little closer to the original file which this computer handled fine.

Your project/preview settings may be inappropriate for your source, which if downloaded, is often of miserably low resolution. Post your source file properties as detailed here:
