V16 - V18 Crash while importing DNxHD files into existing project...

TheRhino wrote on 8/5/2020, 10:38 AM

Sometimes I transfer 16mm & 8mm films to digital video at the same frame rate as the film (15fps or 18fps) so some of my clients want me to send DNxHD intermediates at the same frame rate as the film vs. adding pull-down & sending 30fps video, etc... Many projects are 2+ hours long but I batch-render each reel's content separately, which are approx. 4 minutes each. When I try to import the (20-40) newly rendered DNxHD onto a separate track, mostly to check for errors & titiles, V16 - V18 lock-up. I can load about 10 of them back into the original project without it locking up, it doesn't matter which 10... And, if I load the very same (20-40) newly rendered DNxHD files into a new project, they load just fine.

I have a 9900K workstation with 64GB of RAM, fast M.2 in RAID0, VEGA64 GPU, etc. The same thing happens on an older Xeon system. Under "Depreciated Features" I checked the "Enable the QT Plugin" otherwise none of my QT files are even recognized. Does anyone know a solution, or is it just Vegas not playing well with QT files, DNxHD, etc? My current solution is to edit using V15 or older since I mostly do exposure & color editing with a lot of basic cuts & splices...

I am afraid that is a known issue - you can only add a certain number of clips handled by the Quicktime plugin to the timeline before it will lock up. We do have this in our bug backlog; as Quicktime was a deprecated feature, it had lower priority, but I will bump it up and see if we can fix this faster.

@TheRhino

You may want to try educating your client. ProRes is just as good as DNxHD.

@VEGASHeman Thanks for looking into this. I've been using Vegas since 3.0 & try to promote it to as many as possible. I also teach in an environment that prefers Adobe CS but I've gotten a few to see they can work faster in Vegas.

@Musicvid is there a way to set Vegas' ProRes to 15 fps or 18 fps? I have not seen this as an option so if the client wants 1 frame of film to match 1 frame of video I can't use ProRes... The same is true for Sony XAVC, etc.

@TheRhino

Good question. I'll investigate other 64 bit intermediate solutions for you, but it would be good to know which NLE your client is using.

adis-a3097 wrote on 8/6/2020, 10:52 AM

Use CineForm in .avi wrapper. Works like a charm. :)

Musicvid wrote on 8/6/2020, 11:15 AM

@adis-a3097

If the client is using a Mac, as may be considering his choice of intermediates, we're back to exactly the same issue with Cineform, aren't we? That's why I chose to wait for the full information before making a second recommendation, including AVI, of which there are many choices. Care to join me?

adis-a3097 wrote on 8/6/2020, 11:31 AM

Of course. :)

@Musicvid @adis-a3097

Yes, I'm sending DNxHD & DNxHR files at 15fps & 18fps mainly to clients who have Macs but also some who have PCs because it has been the least problematic for clients to work with, the quality is high, and the file sizes are manageable vs. uncompressed AVI, etc... The films are transferred on a Moviestuff Retro Universal with the 2K camera upgrade which outputs to QT compressed or uncompressed or AVI compressed or uncompressed depending on what choices the client has made... If preferred, DNxHR also lets me set the frame size to match the source video from the 4:3 camera, 2048x1536, which is really good for 16mm films originally shot at 4:3. Transferring films is only a small portion of my editing work so I have been sticking to what works unless a client has another preference...

Yeah. Rendering ProRes (mov or mkv) out of Voukoder seems to work great with your custom resolutions and frame rates. And the quality can't be touched. Test it out and let me know how it works with your client material.

@Musicvid Got busy & didn't have a chance to follow-up on this... Do clients need to install anything at their end, or will the 15fps & 18fps ProRes files load as-is into FCP, Adobe PP, Vegas, etc?

You need to install the Voukoder for Vegas codecs in order to encode with custom ProRes settings in Vegas. I wasn't sure whether that is just you, or includes your clients as well. The quality can't be touched.
