Vegas 17 - Alternative to MOV with Alpha Channel (Straight)

augustasas wrote on 8/19/2019, 4:21 PM

In my videos I use .MOV file as an overlay for my main video track, for which I activate ALPHA Channel --> Straight (Unmatted)

I used this specially for the lower thirds which were in .mov format.

Since Vegas 17 depreciated Quicktime, how else could I make transparent background for the .mov lower thirds in my videos?

Thank you.

Would just enabling it via the depreciated tab get you back?

Vegas can still open many types of .mov files, it just doesn't have to use quicktime to do it. being that QT is no longer supported on windows and is therefore a security threat, it was necessary to move away from relying on it. However, as pointed out above, it can be re-enabled when required.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

I would like long-term solution.

If I don't enable depreciated QT, what are other solutions to open .mov files with vegas?

What are other plugins/decoders of Vegas I can download and install on my Win 10?

thank you

You could also create Uncompressed AVI files which support an alpha channel. I prefer QT, but AVI's work as well.

So there is no an easy way to use MOV without Quicktime installation?

Converting MOVs to another format with specific requirements would be inconvenient, but I understand if that is necessary if QT is disabled.

DNxHD, DNxHR are .mov format, but they may work with Vegas' native encoders without using the legacy QT7 DLL.

Happy Otter Scripts has added Alpha channel support for most AVI types, including UT and Magic YUV. This is now my go-to choice because of modest file sizes.

@augustasas What program produced your .MOV file? MEDIAINFO listing? Looks like Prores 4444 import is still broken (AFAIK).
