Vegas 18 Clips Flickering and blacking out... .MOV specific

DavidKamatoy wrote on 9/16/2020, 7:00 AM

This started happening a few days ago and now its getting worse. Seems like its the MOV Codec. I know that there is a Legacy Quicktime issue and that older MOV files have been problematic on both Adobe and Vegas.

However, this is a new 6D clip I just shot. The imported clip I was testing for Chroma Key is flickering and then blacking out.

- Deprecated Quicktime enabled
- Updated Codecs
- Updated Drivers
- No new Vegas update

I decided to open Vegas 17 to see if the clip would play there and it did so it seems Vegas 18 specific.

Additionally, I just rendered a clip in Media Encoder from the Canon MOV file to a Cineform AVI file. Dropped them into the same timeline and MOV files are stalling and Cineform is clean. I will do this for now.

The root of the reason many of us used Vegas back in the day was that we could drop in native codecs into a timeline saving a ton of time. With most projects I am trying to convert to an intermediate codec these days. This current project I was using conversion to Magic Intermediate.

I had some broll mov clips I was trying to render to this Codec and also had issues. So I ended up just having to use the original.

I can't even import a native new mov file and convert to Magix Intermediate Codec.

So for now I will start converting in Media Encoder to Cineform AVI.
The problem of course is that I am in the middle of this project.

Obviously, In an ideal world, "What Imports into Vegas stays in Vegas." =)

I import the file, convert it to Magix Intermediate and then edit from there.

Please let me know your thoughts.

There is no MOV "Codec."

MOV is a container that can wrap many, many codecs.

To find out which codec is causing you problems, you would need to post the required file properties as detailed here. Only then can you benefit from guidance on this forum.

Not all MOV formats are supported in Vegas, and some may require judicious conversion, but maybe not. We will be happy to let you know, with the proper information. Thanks.

Canon 6D is just MPEG-4 AVC Format (H.264, .MOV files). Pretty common format- I am surprised you see issues with it.

Maybe disable legacy QuickTime? I don't use it with my older Canon files.
[Added- if you have disabled other program features, restore them to defaults. Including legacy h.264 decoding. Put File I/O back to auto, etc.]

@RogerS

Once OP posts the required file properties, we "may" discover it is being decoded with so4, but I've learned not to speculate, especially when working with "creative" troubleshooters.

@DavidKamatoy Hi David, if disabling legacy Quicktime doesn’t fix the issue, can you make available a sample clip that does cause you problems, and we can check it out.
