Vegas 18 crashes when importing mts video files with surround sound

Matthew-Comstock wrote on 4/13/2021, 8:07 PM

Edit 4: updated to build 527 and allowed Windows to install all deferred updates and I had no difficulty in loading in old projects with surround sound mts video files.

Yesterday I was working on some 13 year old video. Today I had a message that Windows 10 was updating and then I couldn't open my Vegas project. After some trial and error and resetting Vegas I determined that it was only my older video files that were causing the crashes. Any time I attempted to import any of those files, Vegas would crash. This is only affecting Vegas 18 (I am using build 482), not earlier versions of Vegas that I have installed. The video files were created by a Sony Handycam, in mts wrapper, 1080i. I will attempt to upload one of my shorter clips to see if anyone else has similar issue. Right now my Windows 10 is version 20H2.

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 10 Home

Version: 10.0.19042 Build 19042

Edit: problem appears to be focused on latest version of Windows 10 when attempting to import files or load projects that include mts video files with surround sound into either Vegas 17 or 18. No problem with Vegas 16 or earlier.

Edit 2: problem resolved when I uninstalled windows update KB5001330. Another person reported that uninstalling a different windows update number had helped them.

Edit 3: this appears to be the original issue mentioned (in German) https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-18-build-482-crasht-nach-optionalem-windows-update-kb5000842--128349/

Good news is that Vegas is working on a beta fix, bad news is that whatever it was Microsoft did to break it was rolled into their security fix (mentioned in edit2) and cannot be deferred indefinitely.

If you want to upload a clip for us to test you need to use a service like Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.

Here is link to same clip above from Google Drive, about 14 MB, 4 seconds. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TT35m29aQgOU6cFuNc0k8mwUxo-W0oeR/view?usp=sharing

It's playing fine here. Compoundplug is the old decoder so it shouldn't be any different from VP 15 or previous versions.

Did you change any settings in 482 from the defaults?

If you want to try you can reset Vegas to defaults here:
https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Matthew-Comstock wrote on 4/13/2021, 8:50 PM

I had already followed that reset process earlier today. Nothing has changed from yesterday except the windows update. I then saw that I had another windows update and I forced that one, but still no success with importing these video files. I have not had any problems with multiple Vegas programs over the years until today. I am suspecting something with windows, but it is an interaction with Vegas 18. If problem persists I may attempt to get earlier build of 18. I am able to import with Vegas 16, but it won’t handle the stabilization I am applying in my project.

RogerS wrote on 4/13/2021, 9:37 PM

Perhaps it is windows, let's see if others can reproduce the issue.

You could use an older version to transcode to an intermediate format as an interim workaround.

Must admit that from my observation, there are few users reporting about this issue, where MTS file cannot be dropped.

I myself never having this issue and still having difficulty on the possible solution that I can suggest.

Besides of Windows Version, what is your OS build?

Any anti-virus application or security-software installed?

As far as work arounds go, in this one project I have over a thousand clips. I also have some other old trip video projects I intend to work on, with perhaps another 11000 clips. I updated my OS system info in original post.

andyrpsmith mentioned something about ac-3. That got me thinking about what could be different with the older clips. The project I was working on had surround sound audio in the original recording, but I was mixing it to stereo. As an aside, many years ago I had decided that it was not worth the effort to mix in surround so I then changed my camcorder settings to record only in stereo. And I just checked my older camcorder footage with just stereo and it does import. If I try to import a video with surround sound such as the one attached, as soon as I select it in the import explorer window, Vegas crashes. I don't even see an empty video inside Vegas as depicted by j-v screenshot.

Intial thoughts: Windows not Magix.

Created new project to match media info. Instant crash. report sent

Edit: W10 further updated 2021-04 19042.928

Edit2: Opens & plays in Edius so maybe VP18 problem.

Edit3: Same problem exists with VP17

All my MTS files are with surround mix and through your message I tried a new one with only stereo.
That was the solution.
So for only use on laptop all my new MTS files has to have stereo mix.
Thanks for your try that helped me a lot.

Hi, I had the same problem with m2ts media files with 6 channel audio. Found that Uninstalling Windows cumulative Update March 29,2021 (KB5000842) will fix the problem. Microsoft made a change to fix a 7.1 channel audio problem in Win10 but seems to be causing a problem in Vegas 18/17 and Movie studio 17.

parrish-wong wrote on 4/14/2021, 7:39 PM

I have both Vegas Pro 16 and 18 installed on the same machine and the files will open fine in version 16 but not 18. Need to remove Microsoft patch KB5001330 and KB5000842, this temporary solution allows VP18 to unload m2ts files with 5.1 audio channel. Feedback from Magix support is quote "With the software not being able to encode 5.1 AC-3 files the software also doesn't support 5.1 audio either. The only way to import these files in VEGAS Pro 18 now would be to convert them so they don't contain an AC-3 codec."

Matthew-Comstock wrote on 4/14/2021, 8:19 PM

I saw that Ted-C had success after uninstalling a windows update. I did not have the same update number, mine was KB5001330. I uninstalled that one and then I was able to open my project successfully. Hopefully there is a long term solution, as that windows update bundled a lot of other positive fixes that I would like to have.
