what audio effects do you always apply for narration

marcinzm wrote on 2/20/2021, 6:58 AM

Hello,

I have iZotope RX 8 Elements and some other freeware audio plugins.

I would like you to share with me your knowledge what audio plugins you always apply for your narration, i.e. when you record video audio indoors with direct mic and outdoors with direct mic.

I would like you to share also your knowledge in what order chain your apply these audio plugins.

I would like to boost my narration to another level.

Thank you in advance
Marcin

If you are bored, drink water, you will want to pee. -> Albert Einstein - my idol!

I am 42. I have been creating videos since 2009 (the date when my first daughter was born in). My first video software was Pinnacle, next one was Sony Vegas 8 (I am not sure if remember it correctly). I am also a developer and wedding movie operator and editor. For example: I have created an Android app which let me control Vegas Pro rendering progress level on Android smartphone. I created it for fun, because I also love programming. I also created my own plugin for Audio To Text feature specified usage from Vegas Pro 19. I created proxy creation plugin which uses multiple GPU threads (maximum 3) to create proxy files for Vegas Pro. I also written many others plugin/softwares which enhance my video editing, also wedding editing.

In addition to my comment at https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/audio-declipped-plugin-recommended-one--127361/#ca79213 , I use iZotope's Neutron or sometimes Ozone to finalise the VO - all indoor recordings made in a semi-sound proofed a la studio - and I am very familiar work-wise in the past with studio VO recording. These plugins have a wide range of VO/narration options - in the advanced versions anyway. Give the trial versions a try - BTW I have no professional relationship with iZotope - I am only a happy customer.

Besides just EQ and the many presets, there are many other processes to enable you to design your VO to the 'sound' that you want. It doesn't always work - sadly I haven't been able as yet to make my voice sound like that of Andrea Bocelli.

The best advice I have about outdoors recording for dialogue is to get the best directional mic available and with it a wind-sock. Mid-range would include the really good mono Rode or Sennheiser mics. Of course you might want to use a hand-held directional mic - but it would likely be in shot. If your location recording is from an inbuilt camera mic it is more likely to be swamped by wind noise in some locations, and then nothing is possibly going to save it if the wind noise is loud.

A good way to get feedback here is to post a sample narration and let others critique it.

That said, Vegas feels that three track plugins are used often enough to have them load as defaults -- noise gate, compression, and EQ. There is no substitute for early vocal production and technique training.

That is so correct. I have so much respect for the many VO professionals that I've worked with in the advertising industry many years ago. IMO, they are in the same realm as pro singers but sadly without anywhere near the same huge income.

By default, Vegas has added these (less then stellar sounding) plug-ins as far back as I can recall (Vegas beta, audio only). (the fist thing I do after and install or reset is eliminate the default .plug-ins, Noise gates inherently, are usually audible on narration and such. Though a properly recorded VO, should not need it, otherwise an expander is less audible.

@rraud Can you say how you eliminate the default plugins? I don't want to delete them but would prefer they were not defaults at the track level.

@RogerS Insert a new audio track > delete the 3 default FX on it > right-click on the track header > set default track properties > OK.

To answer the original question, I have always used Waves RVox. As someone who doesn't really trust their ears/skills/knowledge with regard to audio mixing, I like it because it is specifically designed for the voice and it is very simple. There are only 3 controls, and with one being a gate, which I usually set at -inf, and another being gain, that leaves me with really only 1 control (the amount of compression) to mess up. I usually have that at -4.0. RVox is literally the only effect I put on my voiceover tracks. Less is more (as long as your recording is good).

Thanks Nick! I didn't understand how the set default track properties worked. That's perfect!

Does anyone know good tutorials that shows the process for voice over from recording to correction - if possible in combination with Soundforge pro and Vegas Pro?

Curtis Judd on YouTube. You can search Voice Over. Lots of vids on the actual microphones and recorders.

These are the edit phase. He doesn't use Vegas but you can easily map it with the tools you have.

With the popularity of podcasts these days, there are probably a few hundred tutorials on narration recording and mastering. Especially on YT, 98% are produced by self proclaimed 'experts' who don't know sh_t. Choose tutorials from established pros, otherwise it could a lesson on what not to do.

Yes, you are right.
I have already watched many such videos - with little success - and a lot of lost time.

That's why I asked for examples here in this forum.😉

@Illusion
These are some really very good tutorials - thank you.
But I have to watch them several times - to reach this level on the learning curve.

I rarely use 'gates' and when it is absolutely necessary, it would not be the default POS. I prefer expanders which are less audible. One with a side-chain EQ option is my preference.
