I keep seeing all these tutorials and feature lists on software touting lower thirds. I just don't get the hype. I was doing lower thirds on an Amiga in the early 90's, especially once I got my hands on a Video Toaster.
Just don't get why it seems to have become a "thing" 30 years later.
It's been a teevee broadcast "thing" for over a half-century. That's where the hype originates.

Exactly. That's why I don't get the hype about it right now. It's old school, very old school.
What is old is new again. LPs apparently now outsell CDs. I think that the difference in recent years is the ability for almost everybody - even budget consumer NLE users - to employ animated lower 3rds. It's marketing. And there is the additional market these days of live streaming where it probably does have a lot of use.
Lower Thirds & Graphical element has been an essential for almost all kind of video production.
Ahh... the Amiga/Toaster days. I even had an Amiga/Opalvision, Amiga/SuperGen... Loved a/b roll..
As for lower thirds, where else are you going to add text to give information while the video is showing?
It's just nicer (animated, quasi-3D, shaded) ways of displaying this necessary basic info in ways that feels modern. Just putting text over video is not a feature.
What is it with the "exposure settings" hype? I mean really, highlights, white points, shadows, etc. Come on, been using those tools for years! I just don't see what the big deal is . . .
