Will MagicYUV 2.20 Start of CODEC Wars on my PC?

Almost there in spending money. Also, what will it do for HD1080p Timeline and FXing? Wage of money? Better FPS?

The latest version is 2.3.0. There is a free trial so you can test it yourself.

I'd only use it to solve problems, as in you need an intermediate format for some purpose. As you have made clear you have a high-end processor and graphics card, if you are getting full frame rate preview for whatever you are doing then you don't need to use it for that.

@RogerS - Three questions:

1) ALPHA: Will it give ALPHA from my work? If it can is it straightforward for me? I’ve been reading the lengthy, and for me, confusing.

2) Previewing: Yes, I’ve got a powerful rig but can it be made better using HOS KwikPreview and the potential Speed of the 2.3.0 I can imagine augmenting that. And no, once I’ve got busy with my FXing, etc, I’ve learnt how to incorporate KP into my narrative creations.

3) Removal: If I find no additional Improvements from 1 & 2 above, is the DEMO easily removed? Is the DEMO hobbled in any way?

michael-harrison wrote on 9/26/2020, 6:04 AM

@Grazie

1) Yes. I use it regularly for this purpose.

2) Only you will be able to tell if it will work on your rig. I can tell you that compositing 6 layers of 1080p MYUV video plays back in realtime on my system.

3) I've not seen any issue uninstalling it and haven't seen that the trial is limited in any way. Make sure you get the Ultimate edition trial

When I bought it earlier in the year, after using the trial, I thought the full price was a good deal. The current discount to $14 is a steal.

It has alpha- after you install it you can see the profiles that end in a are alpha. Seems straightforward to me.

Hard to say if it will speed anything up- it really depends what you are currently using, whether it has hardware decoding support already, etc. Give it a try. Really though it's $14, so after a few minutes with the demo to confirm it works and renders play back, I just decided to get it.

Musicvid wrote on 9/26/2020, 8:15 AM

I didn't get 2.3.0 yet, but it's been a kissin' cousin of UT on my system for years, and has been issue-free on my modest four-banger.. Now they say it's even faster, in addition to the new format support.

I use Magic or UT for 90% of my intermediates, for camera work the 4:2:2 flavors, which are incredibly small and portable. I may spring a little of my SS when it comes next week.

michael-harrison wrote on 9/26/2020, 10:06 AM

@Musicvid given the speed differences, even in the older version, what keeps you using UT over MYUV?

The reason I chose UT 422 before this new Magic version (just started testing) is that it came in at a remarkable 1% - 2% of uncompressed size. Otherwise, they were basically a tossup. Note that the RGB flavors are completely unnecessary for camera footage, and are larger.

Great information Gentlemen ! Thank you. Will any of this start a CODEC War? One CODEC on my System fighting with this one?

I'm down to one word answers in the current environment.

No

Only if you somehow already have a codec on your system that is able to play MYUV formats such as:

MAGY: MagicYUV Decoder (Generic) or fourcc used by the old (1.2) version
M8RG: MagicYUV - RGB
M8RA: MagicYUV - RGBA
M8YA: MagicYUV - YUVA 4:4:4:4
M8Y4: MagicYUV - YUV 4:4:4
M8Y2: MagicYUV - YUV 4:2:2
M8Y0: MagicYUV - YUV 4:2:0
M8G0: MagicYUV - YUV 4:0:0 (Greyscale)
M0RG: MagicYUV 10-bit RGB
M0RA: MagicYUV 10-bit RGBA
M0Y2: MagicYUV 10-bit YUV 4:2:2
M0G0: MagicYUV 10-bit YUV 4:0:0 (Greyscale)

@Grazie

I wanted to say above, to your original question, "Magic is a clean codec."

I guess now's the time to say it. It doesn't come with any hidden agendas, unlike some others.

Grazie wrote on 9/26/2020, 1:15 PM

@Musicvid - Reassuring, I wasn’t even considering THAT! But, I wanted to know will other codecs fight with this one? I’ve heard of CODEC Packs being a no-no?

Musicvid wrote on 9/26/2020, 1:21 PM

Codec packs are problematic because they presume to replace system codecs and registry entries without recall. Magic does install on the system, but doesn't do that, not at the expense of other codecs, such as other AVI varieties.

Your precaution is understood and appreciated.

Some players install "unofficial" decoders for MagicYUV. When you install the official version you are given the option to overwrite many of them with the official versions.

If you reinstall one of these players, it might be a good idea to reinstall the official version of MagicYUV.

@Musicvid - When it comes to PCs and IT, I know just enough to know I know verrrry little compared to you guys!

Only if you somehow already have a codec on your system that is able to play MYUV formats such as:

@michael-harrison - How would I know? Is there a way I can determine this? - I'm worried - I think that's obvious to all by now 😨 - cheers.

@john_dennis - Thank you for kindly linking that Vid for me. I like visual step-by-steps. Did you make it especially for me?

Here's my existing List of Video CODECs:

OK, looking at this Table above, more questions:

1) I see DeBugMode FSVFWC as being unavailable, but I'm successfully using FS within HOS? Why is it "Not Available"? Does that "(internal use)" mean something?

2) I also see "magicyuv" as "Not Available". Is this a way that M$ is informing me, MS making a space for it on my PC and that it is waiting for me to install it?

3) I see two "utv_vcm" CODECs. Is this a correct situation?

Gentlemen, thanks for all your input thus far.

I believe you misread the table. The Manufacturer is not known. Same is true from Utvid.

AKA the HappyOtter at https://tools4vegas.com/. System 1: Intel i7-8700k with HD 630 graphics plus an Nvidia RTX4070 graphics card. System 2: Intel i7-3770k with HD 4000 graphics plus an AMD RX550 graphics card. System 3: Laptop. Dell Inspiron Plus 16. Intel i7-11800H, Intel Graphics. Current cameras include Panasonic FZ2500, GoPro Hero11 and Hero8 Black plus a myriad of smartPhone, pocket cameras, video cameras and film cameras going back to the original Nikon S.

@wwaag - Understood, so all its saying is that the Manufacturer isn’t known to Microsoft, I presume, and not that the CODEC isn’t being used. Simple eh? Not for me.

AWE . . SOME!!!

Now, above is my String-O-Pearls that I tested the DEMO 2.3 on. Massive speed demon with this stoopid FX setup of mine.

So, yes I downloaded the DEMO of 2.3.0. Installed, Piece of Gateaux. Rebooted PC, just in case . . . Did this QnD test and the speed is unbelievable, but so is the File Size - of course. The next test will be to incorporate this Speed Demon into HOS KP.

Grazie wrote on 9/27/2020, 2:40 AM

Oh yeah, tested ALPHA - excellent - big . . but.
