4K files causing Vegas 19 and 20 to crash

Matthew-Hall wrote on 11/24/2022, 3:52 PM

Hi, I have a batch of files that have been causing Vegas to crash. I've tried the files in the current builds of both Vegas 19 and Vegas 20. I have edited 4K footage from this camera before without issue, but I may have shot the footage in a different profile this time around.

I can import the files, using both drag-and-drop and the import button in Vegas. I was able to make proxies of all of the files. I can also drag files from the desktop or project media tab into the Vegas timeline. However, I cannot perform any of these actions successfully every time. When using these files, Vegas continually crashes, sometimes prompted by the importing, dragging to the timeline, or by playing the timeline.

To troubleshoot, I have done a factory reset on my Vegas settings, turned legacy features on and off, and attempted using the files in several different projects.

Vegas runs relatively fine for me when editing any other files.

I am running Windows 10 Home Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045

I shot on a Panasonic AG-CX350 4K Camcorder

I have included a link to one of the files here:

Here is the MediaInfo for the file:

@Matthew-Hall

Doesn't crash Vegas Pro 19-643 here. In a UHD project using proxies with preview set to Preview/Half I get 23.976 FPS.

Try converting to Apple ProRes in Shutter Encoder.

I get full fps using legacy HEVC decoder, with Legacy unticked, it's trying to use the GPU decoder, but Vegas is broken and can't use Nvidia GPU decoder for this file, the end result is terrible playback but no crashing. If you have your Gpu decoder set to Intel QSV, maybe that's where the problem is, but John Dennis didn't report crashing

Basically I get the same as todd-b. No crash and no GPU decode.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

It's performing pretty well here with 19.550. Intel HD 630 iGPU and legacy HEVC. Full framerate for playback.

I'd make sure your iGPU is enabled in bios and that Vegas is using it (preferences/ file io).

Opens in VP19 b643 or VP20 b214 here on my lowly i5 with onboard 620 graphics.

Have you tried updating your graphics drivers from the Vegas Help menu?

Maybe start here for troubleshooting help from your forum peers:

Full playback on my computer. Drag and drop to the timeline. Legacy HEVC check marked.
