4k video uploaded to youtube has only 360p on mobile

Hi there guys,

Does anyone have experience with uploading 4k video to youtube?

I uploaded some videos in 4k on youtube, and they have all resolutions available on PC, BUT I noticed they look kind of bad on my mobile devices, an iPad and a Samsung S9. The maximum resolution available there is 360p, very strange...

Perhaps the codec plays a role? I used Magix AVC/AAC MP4

I have waited long enough too BTW some videos are uploaded 2 days ago.

Does anyone know how to fix this? It doesn't make sense...

Marcel

Could you offer a YouTube link to one of those videos?

Marcel, it may be your local mobile carrier that is doing this.

When local towers get overloaded, streaming services are automatically throttled.

On my iPad for my youtube site which has UHD videos available:

Running the Desktop application in Safari, I don't even get an option to set the pixel dimensions...

Running the Mobile application in Safari, I get options up to 720p, but the default is Auto 360p.

It is connected via wi-fi to my 20 Mbps Comcast Internet service.

Errata:

My nose is too big to allow me to get close enough to a tablet screen to make UHD worthwhile.

The native resolution of the iPad panel is 2048x1536.

That can be corrected with a procedure.

Hi there guys, it seems you are missing the point somewhat, fact is that both my iPad and S9 DO HAVE the ability to play all 1080 videos at a resolution of at least 720, but as soon as I upload a 4k video the option for 720p is not there, it stops at 360p. That would be logical if it was not there on a PC either but thats not the case, the PC has all resolutions from 240 up to 4k with all steps inbetween.

This is one of the videos but I've uploaded 2 others that are having the same issue:

If you compare this video to a regular other video on youtube thats uploaded in 4k or 1080p the difference on mobile can be observed...

Here’s what my IPad sees for that video. (Redireted from Vegas forum)

Using the direct link.

The Abba video linked above gives me quality options of 144p, 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p50 and 1080p50 on my Z2 mobile.

I have options all the way up to 2160. If you are looking on a mobile device it is possible your carrier is throttling your bandwidth. Also, after you upload, the higher resolutions videos are not immediately available. It can take as long as 20 minutes.

Thanks for testing guys, well with this video it took 3 days because now I have the 720p option too, yesterday before I posted it was still 360p, very strange...

BTW, maybe some of you would find it interesting that I filmed the front side with a GH5 and the stage footage with a Samsung galaxy S9, that phone is amazing, I filmed another clip with it that looks more impressive because I could run around on stage during reheasals, it's amazing combined with a DJI OSMO mobile you can do anything with it and make shots that you could normally never do with a larger camera on a Ronin-M for example.
