5.1 or Dolby Pro Logic II new workflow ?

bitman wrote on 1/20/2018, 4:03 AM

On my older projects I added 5.1 audio (with renders based on one of Sony templates).

Now with new age of MAGIX AVC/AAC templates NVEC or QSV on Vegas 15 I am trying to find a way to reconcile fast renders with 5.1 audio.

But there is the problem, we seem to progress with the new video codecs and back to the stone-age with audio, does anyone know of a workflow to be able to do this using the MAGIX AVC/AAC templates?

If it is not possible I may settle with stereo encoded with Dolby Pro Logic II (if Vegas 15 can do this using the MAGIX AVC/AAC templates). I am not sure it can and how. Can someone enlighten me on this with a workflow?

Your source must be 5.1 to render 5.1.

Start by posting your source properties.

Since most of the AVR's have the Dolby PL II selection why would you want to limit your work to only this selection?

What problem are you having rendering 5.1 AAC from a surround project?

There is no option for Magix AVC/AAC for 5.1, not for SW only, nor for QSV, not for Nvenc ...

I thought that was clear in my post. I know how to create a 5.1 project and render 5.1 using the Sony templates, but they do not make use of Nvenc, nor QSV. Unless someone knows some workflow which can combine the Magix templates and 5.1...

? Not sure I understand your question. I do not want to limit to stereo, but when using Magix nvenc or QSV I may have too, but at least I want to be able to downmix 5.1 to dolby surround in the stereo (if that is possible).

As long as you can process 5.1 or PCM all of the AVR's can switch it to PLC II in about 1 microsecond. They can't switch PLC II to standard 5.1 unless you have processed it to standard 5.1. So if you process to PLC II your permantly stuck there because as far as I know the AVR's can't convert it to PCM or 5.1. Some people don't like PLC II because it squeezes all the voices to the center and severely weakens the left and right speakers. I know because I listen to PLC II all the time.

1. Encode 5.1 from 5.1 in a surround project.

2. DOWN MIXING to 2.0 and PLII are done in your PLAYER, no second stereo track is necessary or desirable. Reason? The hardware stereo down mix is better than you or I will ever accomplish, and I've been at this 15 years.

3. Done

You posted an image of the HD Internet TEMPLATE, which is correct for well,. .. the internet.

Do the Advanced render settings not have an option for surround?

If not, color me truly dumbfounded.

@Musicvid I get the impression you do not have V15 (with the new magix codec render templates) to understand what I am trying to figure out in this post....

By the way, the reason I use "internet" templates is they stream better. I stream from my PC via my home network (wired) to my AVR.

There is no option (that I can find) to enable surround in the audio tab of those mentioned render templates (even not if you try to use "customize"). I think 5.1 is not supported using the new Magix codec templates which in turn rules out fast hardware supported rendering (QSV or Nvenc).

I guess I still need to use the good old Sony render templates which support 5.1 audio.

You are right, neither Intel HEVC, nor Magix AVC, nor MainConcept AVC support 5.1 audio for the AVC rendering. but stereo/multichannel only. You need to use Sony AVC for 5.1 audio or render separate video and audio streams which then need muxing outside of Vegas Pro.

You are right, I have a legacy version of Vegas Pro.

Ok that was what I was afraid of.

If I have to render audio and video separately and as a third step mux it (even if I would know how and with which tools) this would nullify any hw render speed gain as this may triple the time needed to finish the job. And not to mention the risk of having the audio and video out of sync.

Anyway thanks all for the comments.

It's unlikely to triple the time required to do the job. Most of the time is spent rendering video which you have to do in any case. Muxing should proceed more or less at the speed of your disk I/O system.

@john_dennis indeed, I exaggerated a bit 😜, but faster render it will never be, not to mention the extra manual steps

Recombining audio and video in FFMPEG goes pretty quick. If the source signals are encoded correctly you can simply copy them & no re-rendering occurs. In my case, I copy the video and let FFMPEG re-render the ambisonic audio...and I'm not sure I even need to do that...so it goes very quickly.
