The skin tone grading starts at 9:30.

It's annoying when people put out tutorials and they don't know how to properly use the software. He says he doesn't mess with the color wheels because they're too sensitive, but you can hold ctrl for finer grain control of them, and furthermore you can go to the next tab over on the color grading panel for even finer grain control than that, because each primary color is separated onto its own slider for each category (gamma, gain, offset, etc).

Here's a good tutorial on color grading skin tones.

Watch from the beginning for good tips on color grading techniques.

Well, it's too bad he forgot to level the intro and ending to REC 709 for delivery. I don't know how we would begin to appreciate his grading subtleties with 16% of the dynamic range missing. Zebras might kick you in the a$$, but they will never lie.

This is what I think Josh intended, without the blocked highlights. Grading is pretty good, maybe a tiny bit chilly on this end, possibly due to personal preference or an uncalibrated monitor (so important).

Can you get the zebras in Vegas? Or is this just a function on a camera?

Play the last example.

I played it, Musicvid. But I'm wondering if that's something I'm supposed to be able to do in Vegas? And if so, how. I gotta say, I have a masters degree and a BS from the US Air Force Academy, and this REC 709 stuff is incredibly hard to understand.

Musicvid wrote on 12/14/2019, 7:53 PM

Ken, the thread should have explained that this is done with image sequences and Photoshop Actions, in concert with Vegas. Sorry for the omission.

Thanks! I'll take a closer look at all that tomorrow. I appreciate all the time and help. I'm trying to look as professional as possible as I move into doing much more on-screen time in my online courses.

If you are adept, I will gladly post the Photoshop ATN file for anyone to play with.

Yes, it is. The Flintstones meet the 21st Century. Perhaps my humorous article here will give you a different take on the conundrum.

You're getting there! The only way to learn video is by making many mistakes, hopefully without enraging too many new brides...
