Difference between preview and rendered image.

Hi All,

I'm noticing a difference between the image seen on my preview screen and the rendered image, both viewed on the same color balanced monitor. The monitor is a 2nd screen from the timeline, etc. The rendered images seem to have a bit more contrast.

I work around this by setting preview to slightly less contrast, but it is an annoyance. I'm playing back the rendered video with VLC.

Is there a fix for this that I'm missing?

There must be an entire encyclopedia worth of confused (and confusing) posts about this issue (non-issue really) that you can look up, but it is "simply" this:

The Vegas preview SHOULD look less contrasty than your final render when played back on most devices/websites/media players. If you want a more accurate preview then use an external preview with the "Adjust levels from studio RGB to computer RGB" box checked, or better yet, use a Blackmagic decklink or similar device connected to a TV (OK) or broadcast monitor (best).

PS I don't want to have a discussion about WHY Vegas works this way - it just does :)

@Kinvermark Thank you for your reply. When I did a search for that info, I guess I didn't use the right search terms. Going back to search now, in case anyone else is experiencing the same issue, I found this post by Nick Hope, which gives a fairly detailed response.

Any time. :)

You have now found the best explanatory post anyway.

Yes, you have.

And now, sit back and enjoy the sitcom version.

There is a free app from SeMW, the SeMW extension.
You can with selected "Preview levels" each time you want it with one click show what you want to see at the Vegas Preview.
