Extremely Long Render Time & Low CPU Usage

MysticalFists wrote on 6/28/2019, 8:17 PM

Hello,

I've seen this question asked before, but my issue is a bit unique. I record all of my videos locally in a high quality and use Vegas Pro 14 to edit and render them in lower quality before uploading them to Youtube. I built this computer specifically for the dual task of recording my gameplay and rendering those videos:

CPU: Intel Core i7-6850K $609.99
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB DDR4 3200MHz
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 8GB ROG STRIX
SSD: Samsung 960 PRO NVMe M.2

None of my videos have ever taken much more then 1:1 to render (5mins renders in about 5mins and so forth); however, I recently had a 3 hour session (not uncommon) and was making 3 separate videos from it. The first video was a 5min clip at the beginning and renders in 5-6mins. The second two were 5-15min clips from portions at the end, and they both needed over 40mins to render. I've edited clips from long videos like this in the past and never had this issue. I also noticed that Vegas Pro normally uses 60-80% of my CPU (and it did for the first clip), but it's only using 25% or less for the second two clips. All of this can be recreated, as I've done it more than one now. Am I just lucky to have never experienced this before when using longer source videos??

Recording: 1080p @ 100fps
Rendering: 720p @ 30fps
3 videos from the same source. One is fast, 2 are super slow.

Lucas

If you are resampling your frame rate change, that takes a lot of time.

If you are asking for peer support, please post these properties, and tell us what's on your timeline, including effects and generated media.

Absolutely no processing effects or media. This is simply a 5min cut of the video taken at the beginning, middle, and end. Any segment from around 2/3rds to 3/4th's of the way through or earlier renders to the "MainConcept AVCAAC MP4 Internet HD 720p" at a rate of nearly 1min/1min with high CPU usage. Any segment taken after that takes nearly 8 times that to render.

Your video is variable frame rate, not 100fps.

First convert to constant frame rate, same as source, in Handbrake.

It may not be relevant but your source appears to be 1600x900, not 1920x1080?

Yeah,
Please disregard my inconsistencies there, lol. I forgot I was playing on my monitor. I moved two months ago and don't have my flat screen TV with me. Realized I also switched to recording with Geforce Experience (or Shadowplay) when I got the newer graphics card. Shadowplay apparently records at a variable FPS rate, while OBS is constant and that is what I had been using.

I'm running the source through Handbrake right now so I can test a few renders, but that'll take 2 hours. Guessing that'll be the culprit as it's already showing the FPS is 60 (what I'm playing the game at), but average of 90. I also saw some people suggest striping the audio with VLC and rendering the Shadowplay Video with VLC audio in Vegas Pro as a workaround so I'll test that as well.

Assuming the variable recording rate in Shadowplay is the cause, I'm quite likely to switch back to OBS. Shadowplay was just there, available, and ready to use, lol.

Shadowplay doesn't work directly in Vegas. Recommended OBS settings are here:

Thank You!!

I've been using Shadowplay for about a year now; however, I've never run into this issue yet. Realized this was the first time in about that time that my source content has been anywhere near over an hour. This also solved another issue I had outside of Vegas Pro, which is the fact that my source content has been taking up nearly 3 times as much space even after drastically reducing the quality level recorded by Shadowplay.

Mucho Gracias!
