Guidance: 60fps >> Slomo >> What fps to render to final OR inter?

Grazie wrote on 1/31/2019, 11:36 AM

Now, there are going to be people who've known me since 2002 and on reading this are now scratching their heads as to why I'm asking such a straightforward question, but, in an advance case of over-thinking by myself, please tell me what I should be doing? And, why? - As I said, I'm may be overthinking . . . 😕

My replacement P&S is a lubberly Canon SX60hs, which shoots 60fps (59.XXfps)

Cleanest will be to 2x or 4x original number of frames. Allowing resampling can mask bumpiness from some nonstandard rates, but it can look mushy.

There's a new tool in Happy Otter. Haven't had time to play with it.

@Musicvid - Sure, but what about rendering out? What do I render to? 30fps? I’ve got TWIXTOR so I can also go another way to.

59.94 fps should make a nice half speed slow motion video when rendered at 29.97 fps.

119.880 fps should make a nice quarter speed slow motion video when rendered at 29.97 fps.

Here's 60p stretched to double length and 30p render. Youll have a lot more control with Twixtor.

@john_dennis & @Musicvid Thanks Chaps.

Here’s me confusing myself with options (I have more!) and what the results will/would bring:

1) 60p Project Stretched or using Velocity Envelope BUT rendered at 60p? What are the Pros and Cons here.

2) A 60p Project Rendered at 30p? Thank you @Musicvid .

3) A 60p Project Rendered using TWIXTOR do I render at 60p or 30p for DI (Digital Intermediary)?

So, which of the 3 options above should I be following? Over and above me actually looking at the outputs is there a more scientific way to audit the outcomes?

Once again gentlemen, thank you for your patience.

@john_dennis Ah-hah! Just read and watched your kind Link. Great sampler comparisons. The break-up of the Swimmer’s Arm going-over has illuminated my fears/confusing nicely.

I'd stick with real frames if at all possible. In the case of 59.94p source, you're stuck with 29.97p or half speed slow motion without software interpolation. Though my camera records up to 240 frames per second, I've never gone over 120 frames per second at 1920x1080. It does produce nice slow motion at one fourth speed, though.

That's the way I prefer also, no resampling or artificial frames, just the real frames. When I want a Slomo, I record with high speed. Vegas has a nice new feature for this"add at projects framerate"

@3POINT & @john_dennis Apart from your quality guidance, you’ve reinforced my observation I was over-thinking all this.

Having worked with Waag on his Render Utility, and using it like a gazillion times, on DI production, and my latest project is calling for SloMo DI work, I was asking for a way forward to get my head right with the process. And thanks to you all, I believe I’ve got it now, if not you’ll be seeing me a... g... a... i.. n.... (ps, that last bit was my Text Homage to SloMo 😏)
