How come I'm still getting automatic black bars?

trekz wrote on 4/6/2017, 3:01 AM

I've color corrected some 4096x2160 footage and set the output to 3840x2160 via XAVC S Long 3840x2160-23.976p, and It still gives me black bars on the top and bottom. My screen resolution is 3840x2160, so I know the video is getting outputted with those automatic bars.

This is quite normal when downscaling from 4k to UHD without cropping or changing the PAR.

Musicvid wrote on 4/6/2017, 3:26 AM

3840*2160 is a different aspect ratio that 4096x2160.

Thanks for letting me know. I understand that

3840*2160 is a different aspect ratio that 4096x2160.

, but I was expecting it to be full without bars when it downscaled. I'm still fairly new to this, so how exactly do I get a full video?

There are two basic ways.  1. Reframe in each event's pan/crop selection; or 2. Reframe globally by using the pan/crop facility in Track Motion in the track header - which results in every event placed on that track being reframed as per the Track Motion's setting.

The shape of the rectangle of your video is different than the shape of the rectangle of your screen. Visualize.🤓

You can crop, you can stretch, or you can leave it alone and learn to love borders. The latter is the only option I recommend.

Wikipedia is full of articles on aspect ratios,, but really it's just elementary math, the kind we forgot in 5th grade...

With television, DVD and Blu-ray Disc, converting formats of unequal ratios is achieved by enlarging the original image to fill the receiving format's display area and cutting off any excess picture information (zooming and cropping), by adding horizontal mattes (letterboxing) or vertical mattes (pillarboxing) to retain the original format's aspect ratio, by stretching (hence distorting) the image to fill the receiving format's ratio, or by scaling by different factors in both directions, possibly scaling by a different factor in the center and at the edges (as in Wide Zoom mode).

Thanks, I understand that 100%, but the black bars are only apparent when I hit the render button. My preview screen shows a full picture. Once I click on " XAVC S Long 3840x2160-23.976p, " it auto adds black bars on the top and button. When I process the 4096x2160 file via handbrake to 3840x2160, there are no black bars. I currently have inconsistencies with handbrake, so I'm asking about the savc s long 3840...

Sorry, Vegas does not autocrop.

trekz wrote on 4/7/2017, 12:16 AM

Sorry, Vegas does not autocrop.

After messing around with it a bit, I found that right clicking it and ticking off "maintain aspect ratio" was the reason for the black bars. Thank you though for the responds!^

"...the black bars are only apparent when I hit the render button."

Thought for the day:

"Project frame rate does not influence rendering. You could set your project frame rate to even 0.5 fps, while your media files and your render settings are 50p, your final output will be fine and clear 50p.
Same is for project frame size, field order and pixel aspect ratio which all is for setting the preview.

Some of these settings affect generated media, though."
