Admera wrote on 8/14/2017, 9:36 AM

I see everyone talking about using quicktime so that you can use mov files in Vegas Pro 14 but I don't get that at all. I want to get sony vegas and I have already downloaded quicktime but I don't understand what I am supposed to do with quicktime to make mov files work. Can someone explain because my dslr films in mov files so I really need it to work. Thanks

Thanks for all the help but please don't get too technical aha :)

What DSLR are you using?.. or better yet, post the Media Info from an unedited file. I'm not exactly sure about VP14, but in previous VP versions, once the proper Quicktime codecs are installed on your PC one does not need to do anything. Some versions of QT work better than others in Vegas. Search this forum for the recommended QT version.

I use quick time alternative and don't have issues most of the time. Apple seems to make changes to its codec in Apple device updates that force you to update but I have managed to find workarounds. :)

My advice, transcode it! Stay away as far as possible from anything that requires Apple support when you are on a Windows platform. Try Sony Catalyst Browse to transcode your footage to XAVC-I.

For most DSLR MOV files Vegas actually bypasses Quicktime a decodes directly. The bypass type would be AVC video with PCM/AAC audio. Most DSLRs output AVC video and PCM audio into their MOV files.

You can tell when Vegas is bypassing by looking at the Vegas media properties dialog and checking the plug-in Vegas has chosen. compoundplug is the internal decoder. qt7plug is the Quicktime interface.

Same here, QuickTime Alternative works for me w/o issue.

Okay so i'm using a Nikon D5300, I haven't got VP14 yet but I have heard people have issues with it working with Mov files. So do you think I don't have to worry?

Okay i'm looking at the download page for Quicktime Alternative but the page itself looks rather sketchy?

In Vegas Pro 14 you there should be no need for Quicktime to use these Nikon files.

What alternative do you use?

RogerS wrote on 4/20/2023, 6:06 AM

Vegas opens them natively.

@Admera

I suggest that you upgrade to Vegas Edit Pro 18 for 25$ on HumbleBundle. You have 6 hours left to get it.

BTW, there is no "Sony" Vegas anymore.

@Dexcon

Thanks for pointing that out. Once again, I didn't look at the date of the start, only the latest. I do wish users like @gabriel-b5041 wouldn't just add a comment to old posts.
