Incessant crashing after upgrading from 13.

Brian111111 wrote on 4/20/2020, 8:43 PM

I wish I had not spent the money on 17. After upgrading I have experienced multiple crashes every day, on the order of about 4 crashes/lockups for every hour of editing. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it locks up, sometimes it partially works but doesn't register every keystroke. I never had any of these problems with version 13 and frankly I'd like my money back. I'm using the exact same system I was with version 13.

The auto-save feature would be great if it would save everything you did up until the crash but it doesn't. This upgrade has cost me hours of time. I have switched back to using 13. I'm happy for anyone's suggestions or to hear if anyone is having the same problems as me.

First of all, does your system meet the minimum specs required to run Vegas 17? Just because 13 works doesn't mean 17 will on the same system, it is far more complex and requires more under the hood to work.

Second, have you made sure you have updated your GPU drivers lately? Unlike 13, 17 is heavily dependent on GPU features, and old/corrupt drivers often cause issues. If using Nvidia GPUs, make sure you get the studio (not game ready) drivers, if using AMD, you want the enterprise drivers. Intel doesn't have separate drivers for their GPUs that I know of, so any up to date driver should do.

From there, we need to know:

What kind of media you are editing. There's an app called mediainfo, download it and paste the report it gives for your media files here. We only need one report per media type, such as one report from each camera or screen capture program used in your project.

What are your system specs?

What are your project settings?

When it crashes, does your preview screen look like this?

Brian111111 wrote on 4/20/2020, 11:09 PM

@Musicvid After a few clicks it does look like that yes.

Your CPU is a bit dated (2014) based on Vegas' recommended specs, even though the clock speed and core counts are in the range they should be for 1080p (assuming you are editing a 1080p project, we still need your project settings). It may not be the problem however.

When you update the drivers, make sure you use the studio drivers.

What are your project settings? Make sure you aren't using 32 bit, there's no need for it based on the 8 bit media you are using, it'll just bog down your already old processor.

After updating your drivers, go into preferences and look under file i/o. Is GPU decoding enabled? If so, what device does it have listed as the decoder? If it isn't your Nvidia Geforce card, try to set it to that. If it is, try to disable it and see if that helps with stability.

If all else fails, go into preferences and disable thumbnail display, see if that helps. That hasn't been a problem since older builds of Vegas 17, so if that does fix it, make sure you have updated to the latest build of Vegas 17. You can see links to the latest build in the news section of this forum.

@Brian111111

Brian, try temporarily disabling "GPU Acceleration of video processing" in Preferences and post back with your results.

@Brian111111 along with the other recommendations, you may want to try a clean driver install. Made a world of difference for me. http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

System 1:

Windows 10
i9-10850K 10 Core
128.0G RAM
Nvidia RTX 3060 Studio driver [most likely latest]
Resolution        3840 x 2160 x 60 hertz
Video Memory 12G GDDR5

System 2:

Lenovo Yoga 720
Core i7-7700 2.8Ghz quad core, 8 logical
16G ram
Intel HD 630 gpu 1G vram
Nvidia GTX 1050 gpu 2G vram

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! I'll implement them and report back in the next day or so after I do some more editing.

Update - the problem seems to be fixed. I decided to try one thing at a time to try to see what the problem was. So far all I've done is switch to the Nvidia studio driver with a clean install and everything is stable again. There used to be a lag (spinning mouse icon for about 4 seconds) when I would click back into Vegas from other programs but now that's gone too.

Thanks so much for everyone's help, I really appreciate it.

@Brian111111 - Excellent evidenced based, regressive testing. BETA testing is all about this 😉.

So far all I've done is switch to the Nvidia studio driver with a clean install and everything is stable again.

@Brian111111 - Sure. And, might I say, that you’ve picked-up and appreciated is just how important and crucial a happy GPU Driver can make VegasPro work. Well done!

Now, I just wish there were a VegasPro Toolset that we could rely on to determine the functionality of the GPU with VegasPro. I’m running at least two company’s software that will heavily, intelligently determine the efficiently of the GPU and CPU and the GPU Driver.

An Official MAGIX VegasPro GPU + CPU Audit ToolSet: It’s about time, surely, VEGASPRO also had an urgent, crucial, relevant toolset that removed this fumbling and stumbling of a “Trail & Error” error approach. It’s really not too smart 🤷‍♂️.

I've been dealing with random crashes for over a year now...I just kind of got used to them, but today I could not drop in some footage without a crash, so it was time to deal with it. So far, the switch to the Nvidia studio driver with a clean install seems to have worked. I will update after more use. Now to fix these random glitches in rendering Mp4's. Anyone else every get a random frame from somewhere else in the video showing up for no reason somewhere else in the final render? It happens a lot with still images and graphics. The latest issue was with a white background vanishing and instead being a frame from a clip 5 seconds earlier...I added a second white background layer and it fixed it...really odd.
