iphone footage

Hi Folks

Wonder if you could help me out with an old issue but wanted to know the latest thinking.

I am using windows 10 and VP14 but whilst I can play quick time files from file explorer when I drop the video clip on the timeline it plays initially but then sometimes does not which is a pain as I often find out there is a problem after the movie has been rendered. Is there a setting in preferences that I need to turn on or off. Indeed do I need QuickTime installed on the PC at all?

The iPhones used vary but the latest is iphone7. The setting is "Most compatible"

Thanks

@Wovian Since you’re using VP14, not VP16/17 then just convert from VFR to CFR, assuming that your clips are variable frame rate. This link has some batch files, just drag and drop your files onto one to convert to CFR. Needs ffmpeg installed and on the PATH.

@Wovian ... As has been noted a few times on the forum in recent months, Vegas Pro is not all that happy with variable frame rate (VFR) footage, and it is iPhones as well as Samsung phones which are notorious for recording in VFR. The regular advice is to transcode from VFR to Constant Frame Rate (CFR) via a utility such as HandBrake (or the like).

If the video from your phone is in fact CFR, then the problem likely relates to something else, and posting MediaInfo of one of the video files would assist.

Thank you guys - how do I know if its VFR or CFR?

@Wovian

While transcoding "works", you do lose some quality unless you use a lossless codec. An option available in the ImportAssist tool in HappyOtterScripts is rewrapping and conversion to CFR which involves simply "copying" the video stream and adjusting the presentation time stamps so that there is no loss of quality. Plus, it is very quick compared with transcoding. Here is a demo using 4K HEVC 60P footage from an iPhone11.

iPhone video rewrapped in Happy Otter Scripts Import Assist...

Even I can get it done on a Q9450 processor.

Wow, Wayne's script gets it just right.

Thanks again guys - I feel I am getting in way too deep here but it seems that some of the clips are VFR and some are CFR from the same camera taken on the same evening. Does that make any sense? Might explain why when I add certain clips they don't preview properly

@Wovian

AFAIK iPhone footage is "always" VFR. You can verify using MediaInfo as suggested by @john_dennis. Variations in frame rate will be most pronounced under low lighting conditions when the camera attempts to maintain picture quality by reducing the frame rate. For improved video capture that gets very close to CFR, you can use an app such as FiLMiC Pro https://www.filmicpro.com/filmicpro/ The new version is only $15 (I paid $10 some years ago), and well worth it IMHO.

Noted, thanks. I have just checked with mediainfo and indeed some of the iphone clips taken on the same day with the same iPhone are CFR and some are VFR. I'm not worried about that TBH as long as I have a method of preventing this constant crashing and you guys have resolved that for me for which I am truly grateful. I wonder if there is any hope of being able to drop these phone clips on to the timeliene in a future veriosn of VP as it is a bit of a pain having to convert the files every time?
