@hambonio Fair enough, VP and mov can still be difficult, I thought with it being there own intermediate it might be ok.

You would think.... I know I have okay results with Sony XAVC-I for intermediate in 8-bit as far as ease of editing. I just do not see any 10-bit options in any of those settings unless I am missing something.

Cineform, its 10 bit 422, it is a very good option also. If its not on your pc, Dr. Zen has a download link to the Gopro software within his tutorial. Its .avi, nice and stable, I have used it for a lot of my own archives. to his Cineform youtube tutorial.

... his Cineform youtube tutorial.

And on his site, Cineform tutorial here.

@hambonio The Xavc-I is 10 bit 422, I forgot to mention that also.

The XAVC-Long is also 10 bit 422, but not as good quality as XAVC-I.

Thanks for the info. For today's edit I cut up all my 60p footage from another wedding. It was transcoded to 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 at full levels.

It WAS super slick still. In fact I set it up as a 60p timeline to match the footage - and with setting preview to Best:Half I was getting FULL framerate playback in this format. 😲😲😲

VP's crappy proxy files I cap out just over 30fps. So NO MORE PROXIES!

If I have further issues with MagicYUV, I will try Coneform for sure - in fact I did download it just in case.

Of course when I start adding FX, framerates start dropping fast, but at least I can edit now.

Now I have a new problem to work out not really related to this - so that is a question for another day and place - and I did it my own way, but surely there is a much easier way to do it.

Cine profile on the 8-bit and it shows as video levels in meida info. I found out quick my XAVC-S files do not edit well and it has been a nightmare. Especially since VP18. Usually when I am culling clips my VP crashes literally every 5-10 minutes. I had to set my auto saves to every 30 seconds. I can look back at my last 12 weddings and each one has 30-40 auto save recovers each. That brings my patience down and anxiety up.

Which Cine is it? If Cine 2 than it is video levels. If Cine 1 and its variants it's 16-255 so be careful with the whites above 235. Vegas has no idea what the file's levels actually are, just the metadata.

I suggest you start your own thread to help with the crashing as 8-bit Sony AVC files are extremely common and well supported in Vegas Pro 18. I use 4K and HD 24p-120p ones from 3 different Sony cameras myself.

Vegas proxy files changed in the latest release- consider trying again to assess performance.

Doesn't Cineform require the deprecated Quicktime plugin and is limited to a certain # of clips in Vegas? It's obsolete at this point.

The proxy speed I was talking about were proxies I built for that exact project yesterday in VP18, so BRAND new proxies and able to directly compare from the same footage. I made proxies from source, as well as from the YUV 4:2:2 60p just in case I might have issues with faster frame rates. I went through half of the project before even thinking of turning proxies on, and my framerates dropped.

The 60p and 120p from the a7S III is completely unplayable in my system without at least using proxies.

I do use Cine2, always have for those older Sony cameras. MagicYUV files, although eat up HDD space, have been working great for me over the weekend. I was just trying to get the best settings to match my footage. I do not foresee using the AVC files much anymore. The preview lag, crashes, everything are gone now.

There was a huge thread near launch of VP18 describing a very annoying issue that has affected me and others for YEARS:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/split-delete-while-playing-causing-huge-hangs--122520/?page=3#ca764978

This was one of my most common crashes. Having to force myself to stop in the timeline when I want to split and then play again. Or stop before I move the cursor to another point in the timeline. That crashes as well. Or even having to completely stop before using undo.

I have 2 very different hardware setups that I use VP18 for and both have the same problem.

I know I like to ramble on and if this fixes those main crash problems, then I don't see why I need to start a new long winded thread for all the TL:DR people.

Well, except that this thread started out under the topic, "MagicYUV Lossless Video Codec 2.0 - Ultimate Ed," and now it's not about that at all, despite Grazie's gracious attempt to make light of that. Nor has anyone had much opportunity to pursue that topic since, but thanks for sharing.

New threads are cheap, and I lost you completely a couple of pages back. It's about going off topic, that actually being 'not too long; definitely worth reading.'

Welcome to the forum.

I thought I stayed on topic about MagicYUV? I was just trying to find the best flavors for my purpose. This last page definitely straying a bit with other suggestions coming in, but I have noted for the time being I am good with the MagicYUV.
