Mute audio when dragging cursor

I have just gotten Vegas Pro 19.0, (Transitioning from Movie Studio 16.0 Platinum), and I’m still getting the hang of the entire upgrade I’ve made. However, there’s one big issue that I’ve noticed practically immediately and has been heavily irritating me because it hurts my ears and I can not, for the life of me, figure out how to stop it.

When I drag the cursor across the timeline, the audio will play at a really high pitched or low pitched sound depending on how fast I drag it.

How do I stop it from playing sound in general when I drag the cursor? Like, I’m okay with the audio playing when I hit play, but not when I’m trying to drag the cursor to a specific frame. I do not like it and it hurts my ears. I have a disorder called Sensory Integration Disorder, and extremely loud sounds can send me into a panic attack, so I kind of really need to disable this.

Thank you!

Don't move the cursor by putting the mouse over the head of the cursor, put it along the line of the cursor it won't scrub the audio.

If you use the L/R Arrow keys, the video will scrub without the audio.

I've been using Vegas for decades and I don't remember ever "dragging cursor". I didn't do it when I first used Sound Forge in the 1990s, either. I've wondered why anyone would think to do it. By "dragging cursor" you're making a non-linear editor into a linear editor.

An Aside

When I used open-reel tape drives, I did rock the reels back and forth with the tape on the heads to find the start of the music.

@john_dennis
Kind of like the disc jockeys today with the turntables?

You were ahead of your time! 👍

The J-K-L keys can scrub audio as well, forward or back at different speeds. They do not mute the sound though.

I used to scrub in the traditional way to listen for cue points. My musician's misophonia has gotten so bad I can't hardly stand it any more. Now I cue from the timeline audio waveform.
