Opening .mov files in Vegas Pro 16?

Ken-Theriot wrote on 7/30/2020, 2:31 PM

I need to edit video shot on my iPhone. But I can't import a .mov file. A Google search brought up two videos showing how to enable QuickTime Plugin. But BOTH of those say to choose the "Depracated Features" tab in Options>Preferences. But my Preference tabs do not include a "Depracated Features" tab. So what do I do in VP 16 to open a .mov file?

Let's start at the beginning. Please provide the following information about your iPhone files.

I have a bit of a clunky/time-consuming workaround. I can bring it into iMovie on my MacBook Air, and Share it as a file, which (for some reason) converts it to a .mp4 file. Then I can upload it to my MyCloud and go up to the studio and download it. But that is a LOT. If there is a way to open it directly in Vegas Pro 16, that would be preferable.

@Ken-Theriot

Try Happy Otter Scripts / Import Assist:

Musicvid wrote on 7/30/2020, 4:41 PM

Ken, your video is variable frame rate, which is not compatible with your Vegas version. If you do not have Happy Otter, which is slick, the stock advice is to run it through Handbrake with Constant Frame Rate, and Same as Source. It will then play nicely with Vegas 16. It should also work without the extra step in Vegas 17.

Thanks for posting your MediaInfo. You can turn off the deprecated QuickTime unless you need it for something else.

Ken-Theriot wrote on 7/30/2020, 6:20 PM

Thanks! I'll give that a try. I'll also try not to use my iPhone for video. It would seem that the latest tech (this is an iPhone 11) would make things better, not worse. Sigh. Thanks again!

Musicvid wrote on 7/30/2020, 6:53 PM

It's not really iPhone, it's IOS, which has been that way since IOS 10 (?).

Ken-Theriot wrote on 7/30/2020, 8:00 PM

Well at least I have a few options now. So I'm better off than I was. Thanks again!

Variable frame rates are very important for phones and streaming your camera via messaging or whatever app you're using. I've seen it many times when signal strength becomes weak the frame rate will lower or even pause while audio continues normally, then increase in fps when signal becomes better. That core requirement may be behind why phones mostly record to memory card in VFR when seemingly there's no reason for them to. The combination with HEVC puts a lot more strain on video editors

wwaag wrote on 7/30/2020, 8:58 PM

Here's an example converting iphone 11 HEVC footage to a constant frame rate using HappyOtterScripts. https://vimeo.com/414271488/b80168621d

It's very quick and it's lossless in its conversion since it "rewraps" the footage and converts it to a "constant frame rate". While use of Handbrake "works", there is some quality loss due to the fact it's transcoded rather than rewrapped.

Anyone serious about filming with an iPhone should consider purchase of the FiLMiC Pro app which gives the user lots of control over settings including frame rates. Here's a link https://www.filmicpro.com/

@Musicvid

You misunderstand. Filmic is iPhone app that affects the actual recording of video inside the phone.

@Ken-Theriot

"I'll also try not to use my iPhone for video."

At...

Chroma subsampling                       : 4:2:0

Bit depth                                : 8 bits

Bits/(Pixel*Frame)                       : 0.136

...it's probably not your best video source even using HEVC. I'm not going to discuss the fact that some frames are not recorded.

Musicvid wrote on 7/30/2020, 10:11 PM

wwaag. you are correct. I meant the android version, which is irrelevant.
