Quick render for editing purposes

Is there a quick render setting for editing purposes?

Here is my process, I import clips, do some initial cutting and editing, Render, watch the "rough cut edit" make notes where to cut or extend clips, Go back and make changes, Render again, watch the "final cuts edit" make notes about where to add transitions, fades, etc. Go back make changes add sound and voice overs, and Render again, and if all is good Render for final release.

Is there a setting that will cut down the Render time when previewing? I get that the final Render will take some time depending on my computer power and all that, but can I get a "rough render" for previewing? Or is there a better process?

The quickest, most lightweight render for my proofing, which is prodigious like yours, has been and still is 720p mpeg-2. I just use the hdv 720p preset.

Super fast, easy on the CPU, and reads well enough for evaluation purposes on a 1080p screen.

The quickest render would be no render at all. If your machine can handle it, you could install Debugmode Frameserver and render to an avi signpost file that you could play in Windows Media Player. This will give you full screen preview with navigation.

Musicvid, when you say preset do you mean on the initial window that comes up before you go into the advances settings?

john_dennis , I'll look into this software you mentioned, it sounds intriguing.

thanks, -dale

Thanks j_d

Frameserver is a good idea too, if it can be streamed / cast to his home entertainment system, which i more or less assumed he was targeting.

What is the purpose of rendering in the middle of editing instead of just watching it on preview? In my case the preview for simple cutting works just fine: no frame rate drops.

I DO use "draft rendering" as well, however when the project is almost done and I need to look at results without any frame-rate dropouts caused by slow plugins. In this case frameserver is not an option as the output cannot be generated in realtime.

I used to use Sony AVC encoder (on GPU) in Vegas Pro 13 (it is much faster than Mainconcept/Magix AVC), however because of the bug with Sony AVC encoder and 32-bit video levels projects in Vegas 15, I cannot do this any longer and also looking for proper encoder I can use until the bug fixed.

If you use 8-bit pixel in your project you can try to use Sony AVC encoder for such rendering. However, I think it will not be as fast as 720p mpeg-2 suggested above.

Fifonik, if you will be watching your product on your monitor, thats fine.

Many of us plan on delivering to larger home entertainment systems with theater surround, thus my compulsion to test on same, which read quite differently than on a laptop monitor.

@john_dennis, thanks so much for this. I am brand new with Vegas 15 and have wondered HOW to get things to play back on the timeline. Animated titles don't. Some other things don't either. My computer is AMD Ryzen 7 1700X running at 3.9Ghz and RX480 8GB video card.

When Render As in V15, I get what you posted except the rendering green bar.

Question, do you have to Render As the entire timeline or can you highlight and render a part of the timeline. And how were you able to get the rendered file to play back at the same time in Vegas?

Be gentle, I am a real new person to Vegas.

Debugmode Frameserver causes Vegas to render just the frames requested by Windows Media Player. You won't get a green bar in Vegas because there is no render progress. Each frame is rendered for display then forgotten. You should be getting the green progress bar in frameserver as it prepares to send frames to the signpost file.

"And how were you able to get the rendered file to play back at the same time in Vegas?" It's normal for the Vegas preview to display while rendering unless you turn the preview off.

Have you tried using an external monitor for Vegas Preview? In that case you could preview selections from the Vegas timeline that resides on your primary monitor.
