Recording from webcam frozen interface

kentavv wrote on 6/4/2017, 11:41 AM

Hi, I'm trying to record a LifeCam Cinema on a Windows 10 system in Vegas Pro 14.252. I select File->Capture Video and then DV format. I can see the video and hear the audio from the webcam in the Vegas Video Capture dialog. I then select Capture Video but the duration counter never increases. I can select Stop and find that no frames were recorded.

Any suggestion what to try? I wanted to use this interface to conveniently insert a video while doing a voice over.

Thank you, Kent

Vegas will only capture from a camera with firewire connection or through a firewire capture device.

That's unfortunate. I had hoped that since I can preview the video and audio from the camera in Vegas that Vegas would record the stream properly. Thank you

Normally this is done with a utility that installs with your Webcam drivers.

Sorry, what's normally done? I can see the video and hear the audio from the webcam in the Vegas capture preview. It's when I begin recording that Vegas makes no progress. I hope that makes sense. I.e., the device works, and Vegas receives input from it in some form, but recording seems to cause all that to freeze.

"Capturing" from a camera or other device like a webcam is "Normally... done with a utility that installs with your Webcam drivers."

Trust me, you don't want Vegas to take any more responsibility for controlling various hardware / driver combinations than already exists. See my response in this thread.

Use the software that came with your Webcam for the purposes of capturing from your Webcam. Vegas is not designed to do this.

The reason Vegas does not capture from your Webcam is because your Webcam does not deliver a DV compliant stream, for which Vegas is designed. Is this beginning to make some sense?

If what you are asking is for Webcam Stream Capture SUPPORT in Vegas, that would start in the form of a Feature Request to Magix, from you. Let us know what they say.

Is that a documented fact or an opinion? There is a menu option and others are doing this (an example is included below) and as I mentioned, the preview does work so the signals are received, however recording freezes. If Vegas was truly not designed to do this, perhaps the option should be removed or fixed. At the risk of seeming rude, there is no recording software with my webcam. Yes, I can use a different program, or a different camera, but that's not really the question.

Thank for the explanation and attention to detail. Most people would not have taken the time to edit a post six times. You sir, deserve respect. Best wishes

Your question has been answered; yes, you already have the documentation, and yes, this is beginning to sound a little disingenuous. Best of luck

Sorry, where do I have the documentation? In what you provided or the in the YouTube video that I referenced showing someone doing what I had hoped to? You're obviously an advanced user and I'm not. I'm certainly not trying to be disingenuous, as I certainly do not know the answer.

"Sorry, where do I have the documentation?"

You can download the Vegas Pro 14 Manual in PDF form from this here.

Begin at page 125 in the manual for details of capture.

What is the model number of your webcam? I was able to find the drivers, applications, etc. for the Creative webcam in the tutorial that you linked by doing a search. If your webcam has a name on it or is identified in Vegas Pro capture, see what's available from the maker of the device.

Notice that Vegas also supports more serious devices using SDI and HDMI from manufacturers such as AJA and Black Magic.

Personally, I have only used IEEE1394 devices.

Thank for the complete reference John. What a wonderful way to solve the problem. The documentation is very promising, and suggests this should work via VfW.

For anyone who may follow, on a Windows 10 Pro system, with Vegas 14.252, a Logitech HD Webcam C525 USB webcam works immediately, all formats, at the highest resolution and capture rates (I assume lower resolution and capture rates work as well). At 30FPS and 640x480, I see ~1 dropped frame/sec, but that's perfectly fine for my needs. Simply select File->Capture Video, DV mode, one should see a live preview, and then press record. The clips are inserted similarly to how audio recorded in Vegas is inserted into the current project. This is also demonstrated in the YouTube clip.

Doing the same with the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema, one can follow the same steps, should see a live preview, but the record does not appear to collect frames from the camera. (VLC did work, so the camera and driver appear OK.) There may be a setting outside of Vegas that could be tweaked to get the camera to work. If you should try this combination, hopefully your results will be more positive.

So, video capture inside of Vegas with a webcam using nothing more than Vegas is indeed possible. Some webcams or configurations may be easier than others.

"If you should try this combination..."

The chances that I'll try that combination are very small. My daughter works for a multi-national video conferencing company, we both have I devices that support Facetime and it's been months since we've facetimed.

My Sony TV has a built-in camera and if anyone hacked the driver and turned the camera on, all they would see is the bottom of a shelf since the camera is folded back out of the way. My laptop has a webcam and I loaded the driver and application when I did a Windows 10 test, but I no longer run Windows 10 and I have the driver disabled in Windows 7.

I'm glad you're happy though.

Sorry, that you refers back to "For anyone who may follow." Never know who Google refers with the same question :) Best wishes, Kent
