Rendering to MC MPEG-2 for DVD freezes Movie Studio 14

Editing on an i7-6900K 8Core computer with Radeon RX470, using latest 64bit patch on MS14. Using latest version of WIN 10.

I edited some AVCHD video and successfully rendered to make a BluRay disc in DVDA. However, when I tried to render the same project with the MC MPEG-2 codec with either one or two pass settings for a DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream, the project rendered to between 50 and 85 percent and then would freeze, which also froze MS14. I tried three each one and two pass renderings, each time removing the event where the freeze occurred. Turning GPU on or off made no difference, although MS was not using the GPU in either case and was only using 8-10 percent CPU and four cores during the rendering.

Vegas Pro 14 renders the project as either a single or two pass using the same render settings with no problem.

Has anyone else had this problem rendering with MC MPEG-2 in MS14? If so, have you found a solution?

I can always switch to Pro to render, but I'd rather be able to use one program for such a simple task, especially when you already have to switch to DVDA to make the discs.

I'm still using MS and Pro 14 because of all the problems I had upgrading to 14, especially with NewBlue and BCC add-ons.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Haven't noticed a problem here, same version. Did you change anything in your ntsc DVD template? Try the Architect template instead. But don't do 5.1, Studio AC3 isn't going to like it, use Pro instead for surround streams.

Thanks for your reply, Musicvid.

I've edited my post to make clear that I used the DVDA NTSC Widescreen template, which I adjusted to 9,000 Max, 7,000 Average and 3,000 Minimum, and tried it both as a single pass and 2 pass. Every time the render froze, always at a different spot, which also froze Movie Studio.

As usual, I rendered the audio to AC3 and had no problems. Same with the BluRay rendering.

Since my post I've tried several other codecs and settings and have rendered with no problems. For the time being I'll just render in Pro, but I hate it when something like this comes up and I don't have a clue what is causing it.

Worth running through this list of troubleshooting suggestions, which applies to VMS as well as Vegas Pro: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-stop-vegas-pro-hanging-or-crashing-during-rendering--104786/

By the way, your bitrate choices are very sane, the min bitrate setting being the biggest culprit for transition and shadow worms and blocks.

Thanks for comments from Musicvid and Nick. Nick, I had forgotten that post, but now I have it bookmarked.

This is to give a final update on what I've discovered.

I can complete a successful render in MS14 if I close Movie Studio, shut down the computer (not restart), cut computer on, load Movie Studio and project and immediately render.

From this I assume there is some sort of conflict that builds in my set-up if I use Movie Studio 14 for any length of time. However, since I can render in Pro 14 it is not worth any more effort trying to discover what is causing the problem.

My final takeaway will be to do all rendering in Pro 14, since so far it has been able to render any combination I've tried without problem.
