Sony FX30 XAVC-HS Broken in 32-Bit Mode

ALO wrote on 1/16/2023, 10:21 AM

Sony FX30 HEVC (up to 4:2:2 10-bit) displays normally in an 8-bit Vegas project (current build), but the codec breaks immediately if you switch to 10-bit project mode. I can upload a short clip somewhere (?) if needed, but I'm guessing you won't have any trouble reproducing this.

Note that Sony XAVC clips from my RX100 also have issues in 10-bit mode, as described here:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/32-bit-video-renders-brightness-flickering--138356/

by the way the FX30 is awesome (if you can get one)!

sorry I misspoke above -- the codec does not display correctly in Vegas' 32-bit (video levels) mode. There is no 10-bit mode for Vegas. This clip is SonyFX 30 XAVC HS 10-bit 4:2:2

Can you make one available for download?

Sorry Roger I was hoping the forum could handle a short upload. Try this link:

Are you setting it up to display properly in 32 bit mode? otherwise it will not. You need to know the color space the footage was shot in (SLog?)... then you right click on the media, go to properties, and under color space you select the proper color space, and then your levels should display properly.

Absolutely nothing "broken" here. Displays identically in 8- or 32- bit projects.

Yes, there is. 32 bit Float Point.

It says "The transfer you requested has been deleted." Too bad as I was hoping to try it (am considering getting an FX30).

Did you get the one download of the original 4:2:2 HS clip off the share link, or were you using the recompressed forum attachment?

RogerS wrote on 1/17/2023, 11:51 PM

There's no way I'm downloading this. It's an exe file (virus?) What about Google drive, Dropbox, box, etc?

It's not possible to download from the forum as far as I know and even if it were it's not useful for troubleshooting.

My quick test of putting your source 4:2:2 HS clip.

I don't know what Color Space do you use for this shot, but I assume it is standard non-PP or PP1 profile 'Movie' ?

Looking at the shot, looks normal, so I set the color space as Rec.709, adjust gamma and curve, render:

I managed to download it without that .exe download site that popped up.

On my laptop it worked fine with 8-bit and 32-bit modes.

On my desktop it didn't work in any 32-bit mode- video, full or ACES. That's a problem as the reason to use this format is to take advantage of its 10-bit precision. It appears to be a decoding problem.

8-bit full

32-bit video

32-bit full

Let's just wait and see if the decoder problem, of which there are a couple, is fixed in the next release.

Frosty XAVS HS is a new HEVC-based codec from Sony -- not a Picture Profile mode or an ACES workflow

The first time the site redirected me to this sketchy one. I didn't download the exe (of course) and on the second try I was just offered an mp4.

Agreed this has nothing to do with workflow and is not even Sony-specific as Canon HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 files have the same issue. It doesn't affect all systems though, my laptop has no such problem with any of these files in 32-bit video, full or ACES mode.
