Sound choices on camera

What's best for Vegas?

(1) My NX30 Sony has audio output timing choices, "Live" or "Lip Sync" .. Would I want Lip Sync for ordinary type shooting (not a concert dealing with echo)?

(2) Two choices for HD Audio Format, "Digital Dolby" and "Linear PCM Linear" Would I choose PCM for best quality in Vegas when shooting 1080p ?

Dolby Digital is encoded for 5.1 or 7.1 Surround.

LPCM is encoded as discrete channels that you will mix on the timeline.

Try both audio timing types and see which looks best to you in an actual render (important).

Record audio as PCM, Vegas cant open a Dolby Digital encoded file... though I'm not sure about the newer versions..

I've always used Digital Dolby as the default. No problems in Vegas. I've been able to output 5.1 surround too -- I'll give LPCM a try but not sure what Musicvid meant by "mix on the timeline"

Running some tests later today to get the best audio I can for a project.

While I would record audio in PCM, I don't see any problem with Vegas opening a Dolby Digital encoded file as far back as Vegas Pro 9.

From an ATSC broadcast stream recorded by my HTPC

The latter is a complete waste of time.

Yes, while Vegas Pro would not open a separate audio AC3 file, reading embedded AC3 in a video file works fine.

My choice would always be the least compressed, which would be PCM. AC3 quality is quite superior, but...

It's the difference between six discrete uncompressed, unmixed audio channels, and encoded Dolby surround. You need a 5.1 or 7.1 hardware decoder (sound card) to hear the latter, which has already been mixed down to L,R,C,Rear, and LFE for you.
