V17 full of bugs, crashing, rendering impossible, scrambling data

walter-born wrote on 8/18/2019, 7:11 AM

I spent 4 hours today assembling a small clip of roughly 3 minutes for my wifes Kindergarten summer activity
Input material:
4K DJI Osmo Video, Mavic Pro 2 footage, Iphone XSMax footage and images.
Creatad a sub timeline for getting a small picture show in line with music.
Imported music created with Cubase.
I generally did colourgrading on every track separately.
Only in one track I also modified lights on a dark indoor footage.
What I got after rendering the half way finished thing is a stuttering and faulty clip in the area where I modified colourgrading as above. I got black footage as well and the subclip with the pictures is completely unusable.
Not to mention countless crashes.
That really destroyed my enthusiasm.
Anybody else similar problems?
I uploaded the so far gotten result in 4K here for those who are masochist enough to have a look.

(Will maybe take some minutes until youtube finished upload.)

The project is not overly complex:

Perhaps you should tell us about your system as we have no way of even guessing at what is going wrong.

@D7K - Click On @walter-born signature, there’s loads of system specs there. Looks very powerful.

walter-born wrote on 8/18/2019, 8:53 AM

Last crash:

After several retries I could render something.
But I needed to render the sub-track separately and introduce as footage only.

Also I removed any colourgrading except on tracks.
There seems to be no rule. I simply retried several times always with a restart.
it is weird at least.

@walter-born
I tried to do sommething same as you with files from my GOPro 7, Panasonic X900, smarthone videofiles and 2 slideshows with pics more than 4K from smartphone, all in VPro 7 with a backgrondsound of integrated smartsound from Sonicfire Pro 6.
Totaal 30 minutes project
Added FX's for color, etc.

All went normal, fast preview and rendered to MAVC FHD 50p NVENC, takes 25 minutes to render on laptop from signature.

Try disabling "GPU Acceleration of Video Processing" in Preferences.

D7K wrote on 8/18/2019, 9:27 AM

How about rendering each of the segments? See if one in particular is the issue? Perhaps in the "just get it done" category you could then use the rendered files. Maybe not the most elegant but it might get the job done for if you can't isolate the key issue any other way. Musicvid is a quick way for perhaps an easy fix.

walter-born wrote on 8/18/2019, 9:36 AM

@j-v: That sounds as if I have the wrong computer. Vegas in needs Intel? My Ryzen has far better data, but results are awful with Vegas.
@Musicvid: Done that, no change. I also changed the maximum renderthread setting to 16.

I did that halfway just to get this small project finished and save my sunday:) But can it be that I buy a 800$ software just to work around bugs?

@walter-born - If you haven’t, try activating your NVIDIA away from your CPU I/O Hardware in Preferences. I see from your Task Manager it’s your CPU that’s doing the heavy lifting and your GPU isn't being used, much.

Grazie wrote on 8/18/2019, 10:00 AM

@walter-born - I’ve got my NVIDIA selected and I’ve been doing some heavy lifting with TWIXTOR, Particle Illusion, ColorFast2 and two separate Tracks and using BUILD Ram Renders. So, if there are bugs I haven’t noticed them. Do try the I/O Hardware Tab and select your NVIDIA Card, and away from your CPU.

walter-born wrote on 8/18/2019, 10:03 AM

@Grazie : You mean I should activate GPU acceleration in Preferences/Video settings? Others say deactivate them. Tried both, same results.

It will be truly interesting if @walter-born gets a better result. I’d really like to hear back from @walter-born. I’m amazed that such an important Control is way at the bottom of the Menu, almost as if it was a late addition to our beloved VP.

Also, considering that none of your footage is 10 Bit, I would highly suggest that you disable that.

Options -- (HOLD SHIFT) Click Preferences --- Click Internal Tab -- look for ENABLE SO4 COMPOUND and change the value to false.

That should fix...about..give or take, 85 percent of your troubles

This also breaks compatibility with quicktime files if you do not have QT installed. Best to leave this on until you've ruled out everything else. It's actually quite stable these days.

When results are faulty & inconsistent it may be worth running a memory test. Especially after eliminating the notorious anomalies that often accompany GPU acceleration.

I think that all depends on the right settings in Vegas and your hardware combination.
This is my taskbar showing during that render of mine with Nvidia selected, but you can also see the load of the other components of my laptop.
My desktop goes even faster

I actually didn't know it ruined those files. Huh.
