Vegas 17 Pro (421) Any WAV files in Vegas not working and sounding odd

djrikki2 wrote on 4/5/2020, 5:05 AM

Hey guys,

Just upgraded and bought a new PC and installed V17 Pro 421 - been a user since Vegas 8.

All seems ok but when I pull in WAV files and begin to edit them everything goes mad.

Theres an example.

I've tried the internal settings and turning SO4 stuff to false, changed the audio settings everywhere in Vegas etc but still the same.

Googling people have had the same issue and resorted to using an external app to change the WAV to another format. I used ffmpeg to convert these two across to MP3 320 and it all works 100% perfectly but this is not ideal.

Has anyone seen this problem before and found a workaround so I dont have to create transcodes of my WAV files?

Many thanks guys :)

Rikki

PCM files are 99.999% trouble free with Vegas, SF and Acid, However, every so often a file comes along with the <.wav> extension that uses a propitiatory codec and is not a PCM. If I had a choice, i would trandscode to a PCM format. MP3 is a decent end-user audio format but sucks otherwise.

It seems to be any WAV file.

Ones from Audacity, my Zoom H2N, my Zoom H6 ... It just doesnt work and they all end up sounding like the video I posted above.

Now using a work around of converting everything to FLAC just to get it to work :(

I read the forum every day and this is the first time I remember seeing anything like this with Vegas 17-421.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a lot of brain cells trying to sort this out.

Since you aren't very far along with your new system, here is the approach that I would take. It will not only be likely to allow you to solve your problem, but at the end of the process, you'll be better able to survive a future failure.

1) Select a good system imaging tool and save a complete image of your system as it is today.

AOMEI Backupper (Free)   Acronis True Image Windows 10 System Backup

2) Whip out your Windows 10 installation media and do a clean installation of Windows 10, install all updates, excise all the crap ware and...

3) Install Vegas Pro 17-421 and test to see if you have the bug.

... save a system image.

4) Install all the other software that you use, testing Vegas Pro 17-421 as you go.

... save a system image.

5) If you tire of the whole process or screw it up worse than it is today, restore any one of the previous system images, even the one of the current system state, and start from there.

Good luck.

PS

I opened some of my WAV files going back to 1997 and I don't have the problem with Vegas Pro 17-421.

Why don't you upload one of your errant wav files and let others take a look.

Drive or Dropbox please.

Hey bud, thanks. I dont use those but Ive uploaded with WeTransfer.

Ive also seen your posts on here when Ive been looking around the past few weeks, thanks for taking a look - much appreciated.

And apologies for the colourful language, my cohost messed up right from the off so there is a bit of foul language.

Thanks
Rikki

***************** Please dont download these files and try them as I know they are fine and others have done this already thanks :) This post is to find if anyone has had the same problems and how they fixed it. The files work perfectly :) *********************

Hey buddy

Thank you for the long response, I appreciate it.

When I say the PC is brand new it is, but Ive spent 3 weeks migrating all my software, settings, licenses, email PSTs and terabytes of media to the hard drive so Im not in a position to reinstall the entire lot again unfortunately.

I found other posts online about it though rightly as you say, not on this forum :

https://forums.creativecow.net/docs/forums/post.php?forumid=24&postid=986228&univpostid=986228&pview=t

"The file will sometimes just cut out, slow down, speed up, or will include other sounds from other audio files, that I have within my Vegas project. When I close then re-open the Vegas project & just watch & listen to my project, everything is fine, no problems. But as soon as I make an edit, my audio changes & goes crazy."

"I've had your same symptoms from Day One, but it's only been with WAV files. It could be almost anything, too-- it'd play part of the track, then cut out, then be OdB static, then play a portion from a completely different project in a completely different part of my file system."

"I've been having the same problems since Vegas 10. I'm up to 13 and it still persists. Sometimes an older project will load and play fine, but if I make any edits, then the wav files can go haywire. I had to take my entire music library and re-render it as 320kbps MP3 files."

"I too have had this problem with WAV files, since version SVP 10, and I've had several builds of 10, 11 and now 13. Version 9, which I had used extensively, never had these audio issues. My problems are exactly as described in the original, and subsequent, posts, and it's a HUGE time waster to have to convert all your audio before you feel confident it will work properly. I convert my WAV audio to MP3 as well, and that works perfectly, but again, big pain in the ass and very time consuming to do."

...and on https://www.magix.info/us/forum/helpful-hint-on-wav-audio-for-magix-movie-studio-14-and-15--1209165/

"wav format to use along with your video files, after you move the audio around a few times on the timeline, when you play it to preview your .wav audio clip, it will not play correctly. It's as if the file was cut up into multiple sections and then put back randomly on the timeline or it repeats the same small section over and over again. The only solution I have found is to use Sound Forge 11 or some other audio program and convert your .wav audio to .FLAC format."

This is pretty much spot on for what Im experiencing - I have a copy of Vegas 11 still here so I am thinking about installing it along side 17 if that wont cause an issue or conflict and see how it goes on this system.

Its the same audio interface I was using on my old PC so even that worked flawlessly for over 3 years so cant point the finger there - and like above if I convert the WAVs to MP3 or FLAC and replace them on the timeline everything works 100%

Thank you :)

Rikki

I opened your files and experienced no problems with the files on the same timeline.

Just to make life simpler, if possible, I'd capture all audio at the same sample rate though I don't expect that to solve your problem.

I don't doubt there are people in the known world that are experiencing all kinds of problems that I've never seen.

john_dennis wrote on 4/5/2020, 9:24 PM

I rendered both of your files to 44kHz / 16 bit from Vegas. Placing the combined files back on the Vegas 17-421 timeline looked like this:

Thats what I expected buddy - they are fine in everything from WinAmp to Audacity, its a software glitch in Vegas I was hoping someone had experienced before and found a work around somehow :(

I find no problems with the files themselves and they playback without issue in VP and SF.

Make sure there and no plug-ins running, Have you tried the files without the video in Vegas, if the video is taxing the system this can affect audio PB, causing skipping, drop-outs and other abnormalities.

You could try restoring Vegas to the initial default settings.. or uninstall> reinstall. btw, I always recommend using a third-party uninstaller.

As was stated previously, I have never encountered or read about issues with PCM files causing problems even PCM multi-track poly files always PB flawlessly.

That would be interesting. Many/most people have more than one version of Vegas installed with little consequence. I have Vegas Pro 13, 14, 15 and 17 on this machine.

"Its the same audio interface I was using on my old PC so even that worked flawlessly for over 3 years so cant point the finger there - and like above if I convert the WAVs to MP3 or FLAC and replace them on the timeline everything works 100%"

That logic is flawed. When you installed your audio interface in the new motherboard it was assigned interrupts or configured to co-exist with other hardware in the new system environment. Even gold-plated hardware that has never been faulted for any reason by anybody can be corrupted by combinations with other hardware.

You've told us nothing about your hardware so far.

The downloaded file works fine on my system V17 421.. Just extracted them and dropped them both on the time line.

Hey bud, those were just two WAV files dropped on the time line no video content or plugins installed at all.

I'll give the default settings thing a shot and which uninstaller would you recommend?

Thanks!

Excellent I shall drop v11 on later tonight.

It's an external USB interface so it doesnt have its own address space, DMA or IRQs assigned from the motherboard just via the USB hub. Its a gen 1 Focusrite Scarlet 8i6 buddy.

"which uninstaller would you recommend?"
Revo Uninstall There is a free version as well as a pro version. The free version is good enough for most folks.

Be aware of deleting 'shared' files when multiple versions of VP are installed. But there problay won't be any if one VP version is from SCS (Sony).

i have had this same problem and it is hard drive related. if i access the wav from my 500GB external, no problem but from my 4TB HD external or my 2TB SSD external, gibberish. i don't know where the cutoff is but i am assuming aroung 1TB.
