Vegas Pro 17 - Keyframe interval set to 1, how to change

Nathan-Gurel wrote on 7/27/2020, 8:45 AM

"Keyframes", "Reference frames", "Keyframe interval" depending on what software you are using.

Format                                   : AVC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                           : High@L4
Format settings                          : CABAC / 1 Ref Frames
Format settings, CABAC                   : Yes
Format settings, Reference frames        : 1 frame

My rendered videos are being set to 1 frame.  I am looking for a setting to change the Keyframe interval from 1 to 2, but I cannot find any settings in Vegas Pro 17, nor can I find any help documents

How do we do that?

  • All keyframes are reference frames.
  • All reference frames are not keyframes.

Welcome to the forum.You are mixing up two different terms. But keep thinking and reading, you'll get there.

What you highlighted is not the keyframe interval; that is not visible in your settings. All it means is that P- and B- frames look at the nearest reference frame, rather than looking at others farther back or forward in the GOP. It does not mean you have an All-Intra AVC encode (!) Vegas won't do that, either. It has no bearing on your encodes, other than they are faster with 1 Ref.

If you want to play with settings that are already optimized, learning the command line parameters in x264 is a great place to start, but they only apply to x264. Vegas' h264 encoders do not have those options.

Thanks for the feed back. Ya, I basically took all the terms from different property tools and added then to the poste, hoping someone would understand the question.

I was looking at two different video properties, one has "CABAC / 1 Ref Frames" and the other has "CABAC / 2 Ref Frames" - I guess I am trying to reproduce the later. Is there not a way to do that directly in Vegas?

If it's not available in the Render Properties Advanced tab, then no.

And 2 Ref frames is not "better" than 1.

OK, thanks for the info. Appreciate it.

@Nathan-Gurel

Happy Otter Scripts for Vegas Pro allows one to access x264 as well as a number of other encoders while using Vegas. The Render Plus application within HOS gives you access to the commands to do what you want. https://tools4vegas.com/home/

Perhaps Voukoder can, also, but I'm less familiar with that extension to Vegas Pro. https://www.voukoder.org/

Be careful what you wish for...

... with great power comes great responsibility.

@Musicvid

Those who feel the need to get off the beaten path should probably bookmark this page, especially the Levels section.

And then not change them.
