Hello

I have an issue. My video is rendered and is in colour when I play it back, but when I drop it into Vegas 18 - it goes black and white. Very frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

The file name of the video (if that helps?) is: yt1s.com - Del Shannon  Runaway_480p.SVP_1.20x_768x576_amq-12

It gets transcoded via SVP first into h264 (I have tried it as h264 AVC and H264 HEVC) - still works fine when I watch it back as a video via VLC, until I add it into the editor!

Please help, thanks!

On the internal preview window check if there something selected via the "Overlays" button on the top bar. There are several choices which would switch the preview to a grayscale output.

Thank you for your reply, I had a look and nothing is selected. Also, I have another video in the editor and it is in colour as intended and working just fine.

Could you post a screenshot of the Vegas Pro GUI including the black&white preview? Attached via the "Upload file" button of the forum's post editor.

Sure thank you - how is that?

I see this particular clip already is black&white in the Project Media thumbnail view.

Any chance to share this clip (as original file via a hoster like Dropbox, Google Drive or else)?

Yes, the odd thing is, that outside of the editor it is in colour. Would it help if I create a google drive copy of it then? Thanks

Should it be the difference between a simple player and a video editor like Vegas?
I think so

Yes, that should be fine.

Thanks for the reply but I don't understand what that means.

If a colored source video clip appears black & white in Vegas Pro without having added any FX and without having set the preview to grayscale (or having used a particular odd ACES project setting, which is not the case here), then definitely something strange is going on which is worth further investigation.

At least I can repro this issue. This clip is black&white in Vegas Pro for me, too. Never saw that case before.

But while it plays fine in VLC and in the web brower player, it doesn't play at all in the Film&TV Player and fails to load into the Windows Media Player.

Yes very odd! So is it the actual clip that is the issue then?

You have six copies of the media in your bin, all named similarly, and one is black and white...

Start a new project with one media, the one you intend to render.

Did you know you can use the same media over and over again on your timeline without opening it again?

It seems so. I'm trying to find out a way to outflank Vegas Pro. It's hard.

Hi thanks. I tried a new project. Still black and white. :( I didn't know that, thanks.

Also, it won't let me drag any of the non black and white videos into Vegas 18 either or import them...

This seems to be a known issue introduced by the two latest Windows System Build updates. A fix for it is in progress (or you could go back to a former Windows System Build).

To your black&white issue. I tried several ways now but it looks like te only way to make it work correctly is to transcode this file anew outside of Vegas Pro.

Ah, well I actually used SVP transcoder which is a separate programme. I didn't know vegas could transcode! Cheers

"I didn't know vegas could transcode!"

I doubt there is any NLE available which does not also transcode as this would mean it would not be able to export any modified video media.

J-Shannon wrote on 4/22/2021, 3:46 PM

Hmmm. It is very odd. I have tried transcoding it into different formats and still it just goes into black and white as soon as it hits the GUI. I wonder what my options are here? I have also tried opening the file using different players. Thanks

Marco. wrote on 4/22/2021, 3:52 PM

Not sure what exactly you did. I meant you need to transcode it to quite a different encoding format. I had success transcoding it to ProRes using the Vegasaur Smart Trim tool (which then even works from within Vegas Pro). If you use same tool with same encoding type, chances are it would not change anything.

J-Shannon wrote on 4/22/2021, 3:52 PM

Ah....now ANY video I put into the GUI is now black and white!!! 😰

Marco. wrote on 4/22/2021, 3:58 PM

I just see transcoding to MP4 AVC using FFmpeg also works fine.
