VP6 .AVI Video Not Importing Into

Jordan-KC wrote on 12/31/2021, 12:55 PM

None of my .avi files are opening in Vegas Pro 15.0.

I have installed multiple codec programs separately including K-Lite Mega Pack, ffdshow, Xvid, x264vfw, and even installed the Matrox VFW software codecs.

I get the same "an error occurred while opening a codec" message no matter what I install, uninstall, or tweak. It's odd considering on my older laptop, I only needed the K-Lite pack and the clips would import perfectly.

Here is the MediaInfo for one of the clips I want to import w/ a link to the clip:

Try converting your file in Handbrake.

Thank you for this speedy reply, but I was wondering if there was a solution that didn't involve converting files.

I have quite literally hundreds of files like that and having to convert over and over again would be a huge hassle. Do you have any other solutions?

No, unfortunately, the codec is two decades old.

@Jordan-KC

When I've worked on large projects that had obstacles in the critical path, I've created parallel workflows on the chance that one would be successful and not impede the progress on the larger project.

My proposal:

  • Download Happy Otter Scripts and run the trial of Import Assist. It does the conversion on one or a thousand files that need conversion to work in Vegas Pro.

  • While that batch job is running on every VP6 file you own, start searching the Internet for a codec that works in Vegas Pro 15 and your current Operating System.

Whichever task finishes first was the right thing to do.

No editors support VP6, use a free transcoder like ShutterEncoder that supports multiple files, press start and go for a walk

It has a hardware encoding option also for speed, which you might want for hundreds of files, but try a software encode first for maximum quality

edit:

I get the same "an error occurred while opening a codec" message no matter what I install, uninstall, or tweak. It's odd considering on my older laptop, I only needed the K-Lite pack and the clips would import perfectly.

I missed that bit, so it used to work on Vegas with correct codecs?

That makes sense with AVI and VFW, natively an NLE would not support because of patent problems. I think even though google owns the company now and it's VP8 and VP9 are royalty free and open source that still wouldn't be the case for VP6 and because codec is so old, nobody is going to pay for it

Thanks for all of the advice everyone, but I was determined not to give up and ended up solving my own problem.

Like I originally said, my AVI clips worked normally on my old laptop so I after some uninstalling and reinstalling, I realized that ffdshow x64 is what I needed, along with some specific settings I had altered. So I exported those settings and imported them on my current laptop. Once I did that, I could import the AVI clips with no problem!

Here's a link to ffdshow x64 + the exported settings I used, in case someone else is struggling with VP6.
