What Intermediate Render Template would make use of my nVidia Card?

Grazie wrote on 3/13/2020, 11:48 PM

As per title. My Card will render in real-time PLUS - it's verrrry fasst! But that's for the NVENC INternet Template. Now, I wanting to know what Template I could create that would be great using my nVidia. If you need more information from me please ask. All ideas gratefully received.

The reason you've had no responses to date is that the premise of the question is flawed. One of the reasons for using an intermediate is to reduce decoding load on the CPU and/or GPU. If you rendered to the traditional intermediates which are uncompressed or lightly compressed, the decoding  hardware available in your video adapter would go unused. A better pursuit would be to investigate how Vegas Pro 17-421 decodes acquisition formats you frequently use.

PS

You might touch up the spelling in the title.

I don't know if all-Intra instructions are available for any hardware encoder, but that is the only way I would feel inclined to test one for intermediate use.

The fastest, least compromising codec for my intermediate needs remains software MPEG-2, in a variety of wrappers, and has the bonus of smart-rendering.

I gave up early on hardware MPEG-2 from QSV for use as an intermediate, because it was fundamentally horrid to look at.

@john_dennis - Ah, right! But at least I did ask. I find that’s the best way to commence the quest for an answer 😉. As to having no replies, I could never have guessed why.

@john_dennis - I didn’t know that, thank you! So the NVENC is useless for this pursuit? Are thee any other Templates that would utilise my nVidia Card?

@john_dennis - John, I wouldn’t know just where to start my investigations. Would you kindly suggest where I should start?

@john_dennis - Y’know, I looked at least three times at it, and it STILL didn’t appear correct. However I don’t think I can update Titles, once they’ve been chiselled in Stone, as it where.

@john_dennis - Ahah! I was able to edit the Title! Thanks for the nudge.

@Musicvid - Solid advice there. It’s not just the speed, it’s that I’ve been having a mass of issues using HOS RE in conjunction with Neat Video. If I use NVENC it’s a hit n miss affair if it will complete the render or not. So, I’m looking to create several, comparative TAKES created I from HOS RE to decide which one I want. It’s a terrific work flow! I’ve used NVENC, prior to B421 and it was working fine. But now I’m needing to explore other options, which I was hoping to include the muscle from my nVidia card. Oh yeah, BTW, Neat Video is utilising a combo of my CPU and GPU to do the math.

Start with this type of comparison.

GPU Decode of XAVC-S

GPU Decode of Magic YUV RGB

@john_dennis - Thanks John. Tell me, much bigger do the files grow? Roughly how much bigger?

john_dennis wrote on 3/14/2020, 1:37 PM

About 16-17 times bigger. Plan to use SSD or NVMe disks.

Grazie wrote on 3/14/2020, 3:07 PM

@john_dennis - Where are these: GPU Decode of XAVC-S and GPU Decode of Magic YUV RGB ?

Grazie wrote on 3/14/2020, 3:15 PM

@john_dennis - I just attempted the XAVC-S Long and it stalled and stop at 50%. Any ideas?

For those of you reading along at home - and me too needing some explanations of XAVC - here's a catchy lil vid:

And then this - very helpful for me! And explains what @Musicvid mentioned.
