5k templates in HEVC - No GPU rendering?

I recently upgraded to Vegas 18 and went to render a video using the HEVC 5K template. The drop menu where I previously would select processor versus GPU is set to processor and is grayed out, so it appears I can only render with the processor, not the GPU. Seems like a step back. What I am missing here? Is there something I can do to get back to my old speedy GPU processing? Trying to render 5k with the processor is very slow and overwhelms the computer's resources. I have an NVIDIA GTX 1060 with 6GB. Is it time for a new video card? Is that the problem?

Can you give us a screenshot from the renderoptions when your project is loaded and you choosed to render as this one?

Are you sure Intel QuickSync exposes a 5k hardware rendering option? I have never seen such a thing.

I wouldn't expect to see it with NVENC or VCE either, but I don't have those to check.

I think you presumed things that are not totally true.
I think also that there are not (yet???) those kind of encoders for Nvidia or QSV available, but as I can show that with such rendering also my both GPU's on laptop are used a litle during such a render, look

Sorry, I do not fully understand your response, so I will say I am not sure.

Let me try a question: In Vegas 18, is it possible to render a MAGIX HEVC file using one of the 5k templates using my GPU,  an NVIDIA GTX 1060 with 6GB? The template shows the Encode Mode is set to Intel QSV and is grayed out, without the option to change to NV Encoder, as with smaller templates. I am able to produce a 5K file using it this way, but it does use up 99 percent of system resources and is quite slow.

I can only speak for myself, but your latest comment looks to be true because rendering for such a template now needs the Mainconcept HEVC encoder, that has to be activated for this task.
I'm not going to predict here what the future might bring .....

Well, that certainly explains why the Encode Mode option is grayed out indeed ... so I will need to upgrade my processor if I want better performance ... thanks

@AAz It looks like it might be possible with the Nvidia 1060 6GB board. It appears that recent updates to the Nvidia support matrix list that board code named as the 4th generation Pascal GP-106 gpu and say here that it is capable of hardware encoding hvec nvenc up to 8192x8192. I test periodically with ffmpeg updates and so far have not gotten their libs to encode with the hevc_nvenc codec past 4K yet... they always seem to be 1st implementing new stuff so I doubt its working anywhere else yet.

While upgrading your processor may yield better performance, you can easily render up to 8K with HEVC using HappyOtterScripts or probably Voukoder(which I haven't tested). HOS doesn't use FFmpeg for rendering, but rather another app, Nvencc.

Here's a screengrab of Nvenc support for my GPU which is just a 1050ti.

One of the advantages of both HOS and Voukoder is that you render virtually ANY frame size and are not limited to a few presets that are available in Vegas.

Currently In VEGAS 18, maximum supported resolution when using GPU based encoding is 4k.

@wwaag Thanks for drawing attention to Nvencc which I wasn't aware of... I've been experimenting with ffmpeg's hardware acceleration abilities and Nvencc seems to be designed to work either standalone or in pipeline with it.

Unlike Voukoder, HOS uses the 3 Rigaya apps for Nvenc, QSV, and VCE rendering, thus bypassing FFmpeg altogether. Of the 3, Nvencc seems to have the most interest as evidenced by the frequency of updates and addition of new featues (e.g. direct Vmaf calculation was added a few updates ago). Unlike FFmpeg, you can even FrameServe directly into these apps from Vegas, thus bypassing use of Avisynth altogether.
