Vegas doesn't use codec packs.

What's in the AVI file? Use MediaInfo to answer.

Which Vegas version? Did Vegas accept .avi files before adding K-Lite?

In the past that codec pack was bad news as it overwrote existing preloaded codecs.

A random forum search re K'Lite was that installing K-LIte is not a great idea for Vegas Pro. Use the forum search function yourself to explore further.

So you did something that fixed it?

You still never said what's in the AVI file.

diverG wrote on 8/25/2022, 3:42 AM

@Frans-zijl

Consider yourself lucky. You might well have needed the system image that you take on a monthly schedule or indeed a clean install of windows. You could always use handbrake(free) to convert .avi to .mp4. Much safer than installing codec packs.

hello, I'm just a beginner, but an avi file should be able to handle any video editing program right?

I use Camtasia recorder for srceen recording and it creates an avi as output file.

i have only 2 options to record the screen camrec or avi

after it's recorded i can convert it to mp4, but previously i do that in vegas and i'd like to keep it that way

I bought version 19 but in my case can do less with it

We use OBS a lot here.

@Frans-zijl can you share a small sample recording of your camtasia?

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 8/25/2022, 3:23 PM

@Frans-zijl Out of curiosity, I just downloaded a Camtasia trial and see it's actually 2 apps... "Camtasia 2022" and "Camtasia Recorder 2022". Only tried the recorder without registering. It's settings support 2 encoders (Preferences, Inputs): TSC2 and H.264. I chose H.264. It recorded a file with the ".trec" extension to Documents\Camtasia. Renamed the recording to end in ".mp4". Which Vegas recognizes and can edit directly. Not particularly great media info, however (wide range VFR, gops, and low bitrate 44.1k audio):

I suspect that the full app just transcodes the avi from that file.
