Canon C-log3 video files

Dmitrijs-Bindemanis wrote on 9/4/2021, 4:16 PM

Hello,

Every time I try to edit Canon R6 C-log3 video files VEGAS Pro 17.0 crushes (not responding).

I tried lot of different settings: 4K/FHD, color spaces BT.2020/BT.709/Cinema Gamut, different FPS - Same problem - FAIL.

In project properties every HDR mode - off/HHDR10/HLG - same result - FAIL.

Shift -> preferences -> internal -> so4 -> enable so4 compound reader -> TRUE/FALSE - in every variant same problem - FAIL.

Reinstalling Sony Vegas 17 - no effect - still unable to edit Canon C-log3 files.

What should I do? Help me please.

PS: I have same problem with Canon Clog and HDR PQ files.

Best regards,

Dmitrijs Bindemanis.

There is not a product named "Sony Vegas 17."

Please look at your splash screen, and tell us which version of Vegas software you are using.

"Not Responding" is not "crashing" It might mean it's thinking.

It doesn't work on VP18 either, files playback at 0.2fps in VP19 for me, If VP19 trial loads and plays back your system is fine, VP17 is broken and nothing you do

RogerS wrote on 9/4/2021, 8:52 PM

That can happen when your camera and the media it uses is newer than your editing software!

If you want more specific help share MediaInfo for the media you are using (4K, FHD, frame rate, etc. don't really matter here, so set whatever you normally use)

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

You might consider transcoding to a format that works in Vegas using software like Handbrake.

@RogerS there is a sample here if you wanted to check if intel decoder works with the camera

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d3xcy1ef2ls8okt/AABvApeFYbpBKZtJnnAUwrgHa?dl=0&preview=R6_T3414.MP4

That's 4:2:2 actually. Howard could try it

@Dmitrijs-Bindemanis, you don't show your hardware, so I don't know why.

I have VP19 and 18, both of them have no problem with your Canon-footage, in SDR and HDR environments.

But I have a (very) weak GPU, alone with MPC-HD-Player this 4k60pHEVC-footage needs 50% effort GPU to go.

In VEGAS, my preview is set to GOOD-Quarter, even so I can only watch it running after a dynamicRAM preview-building:

Convert to ProRes422Lite with XmediaRecoder, it goes way acceptable:

@Yelandkeil what fps are you playing back those 60fps HEVC 422 videos?

If you are getting full FPS playback in VP18 would you mind taking a screen shot of that and also showing task manager with GPU info?

And you're using your Ryzen computer with Nvidia GPU?

in 8-bit modus, the dynamicRAM preview is flott fullfps:

FYI- MediaInfo for the Todd B file. It's HEVC 60p 10 bit 4:2:2. That has to be the most editing unfriendly format in existence : ) I get <20fps on average in Media Player Classic. This is meant to be transcoded for editing.

It loads and plays back in VP 19, but quite poorly (<1fps in 8-bit full). The file works well with a proxy. The built-in LUT for C-log 3 seems okay as a starting point, too.

@Dmitrijs-Bindemanis Just tried the clip @Former user uploaded and it's indeed hevc 422 10-bit mp4 and can confirm it's an instant crash here on vp17.455. I'm guessing that's the format you recorded in and that if you're using c-log, you've got the latest R6 firmware. To get better feedback, you'd have to upload a sample of your R6 clip and tell us a little more about your computer and firmware... particularly your computer's cpu and gpu.

Todd's clip loads ok in vp18 and vp19 but only plays smoothly on my 11900k whose igpu can decode that format in hardware. If you want to keep it small, transcode to hevc 420 10-bit. ffmpeg can do that. The R6 doesn't shoot hevc 420 10-bit but that would decode if your system can handle it... I've heard there may be a firmware update across the Canon line to record hevc 420 mp4 later this year. For now you'll probably be better off shooting 8-bit avc 420.

Processors with names ending in X or F don't have an IGPU, and that's what you need for increased compatibility in vegas, so you have choice to use Nvidia decoder or No decoder. VIdeos with 422 HEVC won't be assisted by any 10 series IGPU. The higher end 11 series support it and most likely the new intel processors coming out in a couple of months

Downloaded trial version 19.0 (build 341).

Good news - I can playback Canon Clog3 video files and even edit. FPS is low, but at least I can do something.

Bad news - MAGIX is pushing me to spend extra money for upgrade?

Yelandkeil wrote on 9/8/2021, 10:19 AM

@Dmitrijs-Bindemanis, honestly I find no real reason to upgrade from VP18 to VP19 for me.

But I'm curious. After testing 2 weeks I decide to do it.

The one is, the SenceDetection useful.

The main one is, the upgrade charges only 119Euro; think how much work they afforded the whole year...think what will happen if without our support.

Bad for me is, last time I could upgrade from the US-site and spare some money. This time I'm beatback to Germany.
