Cant get A7SIII video to play in Vegas 18

Chris-Fix wrote on 12/11/2020, 9:21 AM

So I just got my A7SIII and I cannot get the XAVC HS 4k footage to open in Vegas. It keeps crashing and if I try to drag it in, it just shows an "X" and wont add to my timeline. Any suggestions? I literally just bought Vegas 18 today to edit my new footage and I cannot get it to work. It does open in Vegas 16 but plays incredibly slow even on the draft preview (2fps).

Thanks!

@Chris-Fix
I don't have that cam but I like to test the footage on my VPro 18 installations.
Is it possible to place here a link to a short testfile for us to try.
You have to place such a file on a cloud service where we can download it from.

We encourage new users to seek their own answers before posting, in this case by typing A7SIII into the forum Search box. Then, you will know as much as we do about format support for your camera.

Also, here is a full list of resources available to you.

Here is the XAVC HS 4k 150m 4:2:0 10bit: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cXbZyIQnroh_eB9xnUsNw6z24rpkKw90/view?usp=sharing

Here is XAVC HS 200m 4:2:2 10bit: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EBGcVVTMriT7NsCHoAFhcQIupZY6UeBf/view?usp=sharing

The XAVC "S" 200m 4:2:2 10bit work perfectly fine but it takes up a lot more space compared to the HS and I cannot see the video thumbnail in my folder so it makes picking out footage difficult.

Thank you!

Your test shot opens fine on my V18 so its likely to do with your system & Settings. More info on you system and V18 settings would be needed. File properties indicates HEVC file. If you not have enabled legacy HEVC decoding in File I/O tab in options V18 will crash. To play smoothly proxy files are needed.

@Chris-Fix Thanks for the files.
I tried them both on laptop and desktop from signature and nowhere the files could be added to the timeline of my VPro 18 b 373.
The first file could be handled by conversion to 8 bit video HEVC trough Handbrake, but only gave fluent playback after making a proxy files that took a long time to make for such a short file.
My VPro 17 had some more possibilities but for me not enough to work with in a pleasant way. Sorry I cannot be of further help.

Currently VEGAS does not support XAVC HS. It is on our list of formats to add in the future.

@Chris-Fix try see if you can set the camera to record audio aac rather than pcm... might change the encoding from xavc to more standard hevc which Vegas supports already. Otherwise you may need to do a re-wrap as discussed here.

lenard wrote on 12/11/2020, 3:33 PM

You can tick legacy HEVC decode to play it back but on my 6core cpu it's 1fps and not useable, but with a fast enough CPU it probably is, given I am at 100%CPU. As you get 2fps in VP16 I would guess you'll get the same in VP18,

j-v wrote on 12/11/2020, 4:13 PM

@lenard
Confirmed here, that is a possibility to play and edit the first sample, look how that went with changed I/O settings and with a made proxyfile

I have actually submitted this as a bug report a little while ago. Still ongoing. I can only encourage others to do the same, I believe HEVC is a new mainstream format and needs to be supported asap.

Intel Coffee Lake i5 Hexacore (unlocked, but not overclocked) 4.0 GHz on Z370 chipset board,

Intel HD630 iGPU - currently disabled in Bios,

nVidia GTX1060 6GB, always on latest [creator] drivers. nVidia HW acceleration enabled.

HEVC (h.265) is not a new format and is supported.
XAVC HS HEVC is new (July 2020) and not yet supported as MagixDerek stated above.

In VPro 18 it is default with me that SO4 compound plug is used for playing (decoding) my 4K HEVC 50p GoPro files.
That goes much faster than the mxhevcplug from the legacy HEVC decoding
On my laptop with SO4 50 fps and with the legacy 35-38fps, both without the use of proxys
