Changing Temporary Directory (Windows 11)

rtbond wrote on 10/25/2022, 8:14 AM

I just completed a clean install of Windows 11 and then installed VP20. I normally change the default Temporary directory to not be on my boot drive, but it does not appear I have that option (see screenshot). It seems the only option I have is to use the Windows Desktop or create a folder in the Desktop/

What am I missing? BTW, I see the same behavior in my old DVD-A program.

No such limitation here, I don't know if your Windows 11 is causing it.

@rtbond It's probably a Win permissions issue on the folders below Desktop when you click on browse in Vegas. Looks like the installer got to the usual place but the app shortcut has no permission to browse there. If you really want to browse in there with Vegas, set the shortcut to run as admin... assuming your Win login has admin permissions. Or just type a drive path like D: into the Vegas browse screen where everyone already has permissions.

Have a look at my screenshot. There is no means to navigate outside the Desktop folder on the boot drive or a sub-directory therein.

I did discover that if I hit "Browse" I can paste/type a directory name into the field labeled "Folder" and hit "OK". That seems to change the Temporary folder, but if I hit Browse again I am right back in the Desktop folder (pretty lame "browse" feature, LOL).

If I do a File=>Open I see all the available drives and directories, as one would expect.

I will open a trouble ticket as this seems bizarre. .

This appears to be a problem in Windows 11 22H2. Mine just started doing it. It happens on any browse for folder within Vegas. The only work around I've found is to find the folder you want to use in Windows Explorer, copy the location as text and paste it into the Folder field after you get to the desktop.

I opened a trouble ticket a week ago, but have not received any status updates. Yes, I too discovered the copy and paste into the Folder field workaround.

Hitting the browse button on my win11 system looks like this:

I think something's wrong with your Windows login permissions or your security setup. First make sure your login is a member of the windows admin group. If that's the issue, you may have to reinstall Vegas after you fix it, perhaps right-clicking on the Install exe and choosing "Run as Admin".

Thanks Howard. I think, however, we have established that not all Windows 11 user are seeing this behavior. I am running Windows 11 Home. To the best of my knowledge there is no Groups feature in Windows 11 Home, only Windows Pro and above. No other apps (just Vegas 20 and DVD-A only) are exhibiting this behavior, so it seems unlikely that it is a global security/permissions setting.

Got help on Windows forum. The following worked!

OneDrive seems to be the culprit. The workaround is to stop syncing your Desktop folder with OneDrive.

Important: Before proceeding, copy the files in those special folders to another folder or external drive. Please don’t copy them anywhere under Desktop/Documents/Pictures. This is because disabling OneDrive backup for a folder erases the local copies of the files. Copying them to a different location beforehand will ensure that you don’t need to download them again from the OneDrive cloud.

  1. Right-click the OneDrive icon in the Notification area and click Settings.
  2. Select the Backup tab, and click Manage Backup
  3. In the Manage folder backup dialog, click on the Stop backup link for "Desktop"
  4. Click Stop backup in the confirmation dialog that appears.

-----------

For users who don't want to disable syncing of the Desktop folder with OneDrive, here's a registry fix/workaround:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{A52BBA46-E9E1-435f-B3D9-28DAA648C0F6}]

"ParentFolder"=hex(2):25,00,55,00,53,00,45,00,52,00,50,00,52,00,4f,00,46,00,49,\

Thanks. While I stopped running OneDrive it was probably running at the time I did the initial Vegas Pro 20 and DVDA installs under Windows 11. I completely removed OneDrive (its more trouble than its worth) and then uninstalled VP20 and DVDA. Upon the re-install of VP and DVDA the problem cleared.

It seems like this is still a Magix issue, but I can live with this workaround. Thanks!

From what I've found on this issue, it's not unique to Vegas. Others were having the same issue using other applications. Seems to be something that broke following a Windows update. Hopefully they'll fix it in a future Windows updates.

Same problem here, and I dont want to change anything in onedrive, so maybe I must wait for a fix in windows update...

You can write directly the temp path folder as someone suggested but vegas keeps writting a lot of files in C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\20.0
