Feature Request - HEIC Unrecognized By Vegas Pro19 SlideshowCreator

Ray-Nicklas wrote on 1/21/2022, 12:04 PM

I am using Vegas Pro 19 on Windows 10.

I have just realized that when creating a slide show, that the HEIC format is not recognized as a picture format, and hence those pictures are always left out of my slideshow. I can drop them into the project manually, but they are excluded from slideshows.

Thanx

@Ray-Nicklas There's an option in Preferences - File I/O - Enable Legacy HEVC, does turning that on make a difference? & are the pics not in the timeline or not in the rendered out slideshow video?

Ray-Nicklas wrote on 1/21/2022, 1:42 PM

No, that's not it. HEIC is an Apple picture file format that appeared maybe 5 years ago, and it still used in their phones. They say that the format is more space efficient than JPG. I can convert them to JPG external to Vegas, but that's an extra step. Windows displays them natively, as do many other programs.

Former user wrote on 1/21/2022, 1:50 PM

@Ray-Nicklas Yep they're both 'High Efficiency' formats but as far as i know Vegas doesn't have a HEIC button, that's why i asked if it made a difference, My Windows 10 won't display/play some HEIC or HEVC, t's asks for a payment for a codec, but you say yours doesn't ask & plays no prob, which is interesting.

Include the words "Feature Request" in your thread title and it will be noticed by the right people. Personally, I avoid high compression lossy formats, even JPEG, whenever possible.

Being as Vegas has its own HEVC codec, it shouldn't be a monumental task. Explanation: HEVC and HEIC use the same image compression.

Confirmed. "Insert slideshow" (never used it...) has no option to accept .heic. If I insert .heic files manually into the timeline, it works (but not as a slideshow, of course).

Workaround maybe: convert .heic to .jpg or .png and it will work...

No luck opening heic files directly with any Win10 viewer or Vegas. I have heif and hevc Microsoft drivers installed and heif files work fine in the Vegas Slideshow tool if they are renamed with a png extension. The heif files can also be dropped onto the Vegas timeline without renaming. I was not able to drop an heic file onto my Vegas 19 timeline manually, however, no matter what the file extension... the heic files I tried were the ones from this github site. Looks like the only way I might be able to deal with those heic files in Windows or Vegas right now is to convert them with a tool to either jpg, png, or heif.

Former user wrote on 1/22/2022, 12:26 PM

@Howard-Vigorita In that link you provided to github, there's 5 HEIC files, the first 4 i can download, the 5th just opens the picture, i can only right click save as png, so i skipped that,

Nothing on my system will open these to view, it asks me to install the 0.79p codec which i haven't, Vegas just shows an empty event when they're dragged in, but...

Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium loads the first 3 but the 4th crashes the program,🤷‍♂️

@Former user Was beginning to wonder if those github heic samples were valid because none of the free viewer/converters on the Microsoft Store I've found can do much of anything with them. Looks like they're 3 years old. Perhaps someone with a recent I-Phone can put up some more current samples for download from a dropbox or google drive.

Get this:

CopyTrans HEIC

You can open them in Irfanview, and save them to "something."

@Howard-Vigorita I've got a Samsung Galazy S21 Ultra, 9pm here so can't really take pics, i'll go outside tomorrow, but here's settings offered on my phone, (i don't normally have this set to HEIC)

2 Pics with just HEIC ticked neither show in MEP, just an empty event with a black screen

& this is 2 pics with the HEIC & RAW ticked, same again, neither show in MEP or Vegas

Just found these "heic" samples... but although they have the heic file extension, the download page says they are "heif" and they appear to have multiple images inside like a video or animation. The free RealHeicConverter also likes em. In any event, I can drop them onto my Vegas timeline as-is or rename them to png and pull them in with the Slideshow menu choice in Vegas.

@Former user looks like your google drive links are restricted

@Howard-Vigorita  Something very interesting just happened, as i said when i tried opening these HEIC files inc the ones i created & put in the Google drop box, Windows asked me to pay 0.79p & install a codec for them,

I decided f*it & clicked on the link - Download - which sort of took payment from my PayPal, although it didn't open PayPal i didn't sign in to PayPal 😕🙃😂🤷‍♂️

the HEIC files show the pic in thumbnails on my pc instead of a blue white folder icon & they open in windows Photos 👍

I removed all files from C:\Users\gidjo\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\19.0, relaunched Vegas, now all files show & play inc the dodgy Image 4 of a dinosaur 🙃😂🤷‍♂️👍 I'll have a play with the slideshow, @Ray-Nicklas can you describe or show a screen capture of what you mean by 'slideshow' thanks

PS Edit @Ray-Nicklas I just read your title again,,, SlideshowCreator ? I can't find that?

Vegas is very slow & jerky, creating Dynamic ram as a trial to make it play better, CPU & GPU not doing much,

Playback not perfect when dynamic ram finished 😕

But Selectively Prerender once done plays correctly..

Former user wrote on 1/22/2022, 4:07 PM

I put the 10 pics on the timeline, rendered at 3840 x 2160

rendering went ok

successful render & output file plays no pro 👍

Vegas doesn't like working with these files tho, even when i reduce the project to 1920 x 1080

@Ray-Nicklas Just found Slideshow 🤦‍♂️🙃 Nope the HEIC still don't show 🤔😒🤷‍♂️

frmax wrote on 1/22/2022, 4:41 PM

No problem here. after download I directly dropped them from Chrome into timeline, even preview works normal, no lag.

Looking in "Apps" I can see Microsoft HEIF Image Extensions installed (dated 23.12.2021); I can´t remember howto install that without paying, but there was a simple trick to do so

@frmax Do the HEIC files show in the Slideshow import folder?

frmax wrote on 1/23/2022, 1:27 PM

No, as said before , no option in the "open file"-dialog of slideshow for .heic. I j just wanted to show that the handling of the data type .heic in Vegas is once again very system dependent, sometimes quite simple sometimes almost not feasible.

Imho. Vegas slideshow is a weak instrument, if automated slideshows are preferred, I would recommend more Magix Photostory deluxe, much better for this purpose.

... when i tried opening these HEIC files inc the ones i created & put in the Google drop box, Windows asked me to pay 0.79p & install a codec for them,

@Former user I don't think I had to pay for the HEIF drivers on the Microsoft Store...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/heif-image-extensions/9pmmsr1cgpwg

The HEVC video drivers, however, are not generally free on the US Microsoft Store (0.99cents) like they used to be... if av1 ever catches on it should put an end to that nuisance. The Win10 HEVC drivers are apparently still free in the EU if you search for them.

Former user wrote on 1/25/2022, 3:02 PM

@Howard-Vigorita Yeah it was the HEVC Video Extensions i paid for, it had an effect on whether Vegas loaded the HEIC files, Vegas then allowed them 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙃🤔🤯😂😂

This is my receipt,

When i open that link you shared i get this in the pic, because it says 'Get' I presume i haven't got it, i'll download & see if it makes any difference, (I've signed in since & it still says Get)

Yeah, shouldn't have to pay the pittance for this ,

PS I went to download, the window that opens says 'Open', that normally means i already have it installed 🤔
