how do you apply LUT file?

Hello,

How do you apply LUT file for i.e. SLOG3 video files?

1) Do you use third party plugin for applying LUT file?

2) Do you always use Vegas Pro "LUT filter" video effect for it?

3) Is "LUT filter" effect (built in Vegas Pro) good enough and maps colors/luminance in the best possible way?

Did you do some research to achieve the best goal for it?

Regards
Marcin

What is the proper way to apply white balance plugin while applying LUT effect plugin?

Should white balance plugin be applied next after LUT effect plugin being applied as first?

@Dexcon Do you notice that Vision-Color LUT plugin makes the rendering longer than while using LUT filter plugin?

The native LUT effect or the Color Grading Panel give you the widest control. Which naturally looks the best, pre- or post- WB? Normally, I like to have the range of levels correct before applying the LUT.

Do you notice that Vision-Color LUT plugin makes the rendering longer than while using LUT filter plugin?

@marcinzm  ... Although I don't use LUTs very much, I havern't used the Vision Color LUT plugin since Vegas Pro got its own LUT plugin ((VP17 I think). Anway, I just re-installed the VC LUT plugin and, using the same 4K video event and the same color LUT (from SmallHD), I compared render time to that with VP's native LUT plugin.

VP's plugin: 15 secs

VC's plugin: 29 secs

Vegas' LUT plugin has a Strength slider, which is essential in my work, bc grading LUTS are applied at 30-50%. VisionColor does not have a Strength slider, at least not the version I have installed.

My free LUTS4Vegas archive is here, including the full factory set of Canon, Pana, Sony, and color spaces.

great tip! I use version 21 but when I add a lut in the list I can't remove it anymore after that. I removed some bad luts but they still are in the list. How can I do this?

update: after restarting vegas the added luts are gone. With camera lut from the color grading panel I can see easier another lut in preview. With the vegas lut filter I can't scroll through my luts for a quick preview.

@BONLEV Far as I know, the only way to change the vp21 cgp-lut drop-down list is to copy/delete cube files in this folder:

C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 21.0\OFX Video Plug-Ins\Vfx1.ofx.bundle\Contents\Resources\AutoLooks

The ones with the text names are camera luts. The ones with numeric names refer to look-luts and are harder to identify.

I put quality 64- and 65-point luts there which I download from the support sites of my camera makers. The Vegas supplied camera luts are only medium-quality 33-point. Luts are text files that can be opened with Notepad. Each Vegas version has it's own folder. And Vegas needs to be restarted to pick up changes.

I did what you said but It made no difference.

The rest of the luts (they are all cube files) I selected before to watch from the list are gone after closing vegas pro 21. Only the latest one is still applied. (in the case the free AC-arri-look-V2C) I guess I have to use the "look lut" for this? Because if I also enable slog3 to rec709 the image is way oversaturated (when slider on strength 1)

It was slog3 test footage fom my sony FX6 (filmed in 8bit)

UPDATE! after testing and restarting vegas pro a few times my luts in the "look lut" are not staying but only the latest applied one. In "input lut" (left in the schreenshot) it works and they stay in the list!

Can we visualize the LUTs in advance with this plugin? Because the Vegas Lut filter is so annoying, I have dozens of LUTs that I have to load one by one and I don't even know what it corresponds to. Magix should improve this plugin by allowing a preview window a bit like Looks from Bullet does

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 9/6/2024, 7:58 AM

@davewire35 No, Vision color lut plugin does not have any kind of preview, and is one i never recommend, its very limited..... Use 3D LUT Creator OFX Plugin it has everything you can wish for in a Professional Lut utility, including an incredible preview feature and added features.

@Steve_Rhoden @davewire35 Indeed, It's a very nice Plugin! And @Steve_Rhoden Thanks for sharing that.
I wrote a script that will do this;

1º - It will open the 3D LUT Creator OFX Plugin.
2º - It will open the LUT Manager Window automatically.

If you guys see this way usable, here's the code;

using System;
using ScriptPortal.Vegas;

namespace Test_Script
{
    public class Class1
    {
        public Vegas myVegas;

        public void Main(Vegas vegas)
        {
            myVegas = vegas;

            foreach (Track myTrack in myVegas.Project.Tracks)
            {
                if (myTrack.IsVideo())
                {
                    foreach (VideoEvent evnt in myTrack.Events)
                    {
                        if (evnt.Selected)
                        {
                            string plugInUID = "{Svfx:openfx.3DLutCreatorPlugin}";

                            PlugInNode fx = myVegas.VideoFX;
                            PlugInNode plugin = fx.GetChildByUniqueID(plugInUID);
                            Effect effect = new Effect(plugin);
                            evnt.Effects.Add(effect);

                            OFXEffect ofx = effect.OFXEffect;

                            foreach (OFXParameter parm in ofx.Parameters)
                            {

                                if (parm.ParameterType == OFXParameterType.PushButton && parm.Name == "lutmanagerbutton")
                                {
                                    parm.ParameterChanged();
                                }
                            }

                            evnt.OpenVideoEffectUI();
                        }
                    }
                }
            }
        }
    }
}

public class EntryPoint
{
    public void FromVegas(Vegas vegas)

This Version will open the LUT Manager window automatically if you run the script again, in case you need to choose another LUT option;

Has anybody from forum compared the rendering time and smoothness preview while editing with using 3D LUT Creator OFX Plugin and LUT Filter and other LUT third party plugins? Which one is the quickest one and which give the best color/saturation/contrast mapping?

I've only compared 3D LUT Creator with the default Vegas FX-chain LUT back in vp17 or so. Only performance differences depended on size (eg, 16-, 33-, 64-, or 65-point ) and interpolation (eg, linear or tetrahedral). Not the plugin. More recently, if I also use CGP for other color grading, the same LUTs render faster if added there rather than to an FX chain.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 9/7/2024, 5:31 PM

@marcinzm 3D LUT Creator OFX Plugin gives the best mapping, coupled with the best needed features..... The Vegas Lut filter because it's integrated is a smidge faster, not significantly noticeable.
