Possible solution to ripple timeline editing/spacebar playback crashes

RonB_USA wrote on 6/9/2020, 12:09 PM

I have read several VEGAS Pro threads on this Forum about some editors' systems crashing during cutting out segments/trimming/editing timeline events while using auto-ripple to snap things back together (etc.) and then playing back and forth quickly with the spacebar. I'm eager to report that I may have solved those infrequent crashing problems in my case. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of video files or settings that I use; it is frustrating and happens perhaps a couple of times a day. It simply freezes and a notice pops up when manually closing. I have a very good, powerful workstation, so it's probably not related to that. But, over a long span of time and at least a couple of different Builds, including my current VP17-452, I have noticed the following...

I had noticed that the lower on the screen that I worked with the 4K video track (having more tracks, etc.), the more frequent the crashes occurred. So it could have just been that working in that lower part of the screen that those crashes occurred. I got the idea to use the Options | Preferences | Display setting to move the tracks to the top of my screen and the Preview, Master Bus, etc. to the bottom. The Display setting, as you all know, is to uncheck the "Display timeline at bottom of main window". Now my timeline is at the top and most of my work is in the middle of the screen instead of the bottom. So far, it seems to have stopped all crashes. If this is true, it could help the developers find the solution to this lower area of the screen where this seemed to occur for me. Only time will tell. But it is working fine so far. If you experience this problem, try this solution and let us know. Thanks.

I tried it and this is my result after about ten cuts.

I never hit Control + S during that session.

@RonB_USA

Have you tried turning off GPU Acceleration of Video Processing in Preferences?

RonB_USA wrote on 6/9/2020, 4:38 PM

Thanks, @john_dennis and @Musicvid. I believe that I did try turning off GPU in the past but I'll try it again when I get back to my editing desk. (FYI... My new computer system is listed under +signature)

Sorry, I changed my mind. I am not doing the "turn off GPU test". I have had no crashes since I moved the timeline to the top and Preview to the bottom. And I edit long hours almost every day. Magic Magix! Fixed!

ALMOST A MONTH LATER... Zero crashes with timeline at the top, and I'm still using 200 Dynamic RAM! YAY!

UPDATE almost three months later... Not sure what happened but am having freezes again, but not as many. Turned OFF GPU Acceleration resulting in fewer, but still some. Will try turning off CPU Overclocking.

I can reproduce the problem with 5 clicks+delete key.. (gpu off and timeline at top of course)

I hate V12 because of this, and still use V11. Much better, faster work!

@relaxvideo

I'm curious to know if you have bought a new hard drive yet.

A memory like an elephant 😄😄😄

Former user wrote on 6/20/2020, 9:02 PM

That's the fault that many believe is related to the video ram preview which by default is set to 200mb, and fix is setting to 0mb. It makes sense because the ram preview is auto generated when you are stopping and going back and forth, you don't have to do shift B. But it also seems there always is a ram buffer of about 1 second even if set to 0, so you could still get errors potentially but not as many

It is an old sony vegas bug that magix never fixed

john_dennis: Wow, your memory is was ahead of mine!
I had to read the whole post for answer you now :)

Yes, i have 10 hdds now, and all my editing work start with mtsmerger.exe.

But if you know how to join 2gb files on the timeline without and video/audio issue, let me know :)

There are threads on this, but first question what type of files are they?

relaxvideo wrote on 6/21/2020, 7:52 AM

2D and 3D files from my Sony TD30, WX350, A5100, Hero3+ and Osmo action cameras.
I make long events with all of these, but this is offtopic here. Is there a solution yet?

i already have one, which john_dennis linked before :)

@relaxvideo

It is better if the title of the thread matches the content - otherwise someone who has similar problems will hardly find anything helpful with the search function in the future if everything is mixed up.

So: better is, as @michael-harrison stated: new game, new, meaningful title.

Oh walter-i, please read my post above carefully.

Why start a new thread? i ALREADY have one..

Title is: "Edit from the SD card?"
