Render Settings for VHS (and other)

@Denicio

As @Musicvid said earlier, there are many different ways to get things done. My big assumption was that you are moving forever into the land of square pixels. Here's how I did it.

There are probably not many people who still consider these things, but:

704 X 0.9091 = 640.0064

John,

You are a man after my own heart! You speak my language. THANK YOU so very much for the nitty gritty detailed video tutorial. This is what i needed! My nerd brain thanks you!

You guys all ROCK with all the advice and handholding you've been gracious enough to give me! I will refer to this video often, create templates and write down the steps/settings for future reference.

Musicvid wrote on 1/13/2022, 2:34 PM

And I used the storage dimensions:

720x .9091 = 654.552

"... who's to say which is right, and which is an illusion?"

-- Mike Pinder, Stairway to Heaven

The point is, no matter how one figures it, streaming services need square pixels, or it will convert them. I don't know of any that stream anamorphic, or interlaced for that matter, save for some broadcast transport streams.

Honestly, i would not even know where to tweak such settings in vegas.

Remember, i use Vegas but dont let that fool you into thinking in know what i am doing :-)

I am hoping with crossed fingers that Your advice a few posts up and John's video tutorial is essentially all i need.

I think in over twenty years of friendship on this forum, neither John nor I have used the word "wrong" in our discussions...

Basically, you use simple ratio math to convert anamorphic (non-square) to square pixels.

The example below uses FHD 1920x1080 square pixels. Can you tell me what the Pixel Aspect Ratio is for [Storage Aspect 1440x1080 / Display Aspect 1920x1080] (HDV tape spec?). No cheating, John.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/pixel-ratio--133678/#ca833723

To introduce you to the math, I'd like you to meet my friends, the brothers Sar, Dar, and Par:

DAR / SAR = PAR

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_aspect_ratio

And finally, my little math quiz for video editors, John being the only one to get them all right, or even respond for that matter...

A sure fire way to keep me from doing ANY video editing is to throw in some math! HA! Hey, i went to Private school....dont expect me to do anything other than city holy writings from memory. Seriously, Math causes me to tense up, my stomach acids to churn and my tic's to act up...and i aint even joking a little bit. I'll trust that ALL that you type is sound and true. Hey, i am a bass player...the only math i understand is 4/4 , 3/4, and sometimes 11/8 !!

Me and Math, we dont get along. This could explain why i am losing my arse with crypto......ahem~

(all of this said in my Jaded Sly Sarcastic way)

I once had an Aspergers student who would have a full tilt, floor-pounding meltdown in the classroom if you even suggested he try to multiply 4x3. Visual-spatial learners are like that. I started him on patterns, shapes, and colors to get him past the linear sequential approach to learning. I worked with him for seven years straight, summer and winter. By age 11, he could do quadratics and derivatives in his head. At age 14, he started converting his father's engineering firm from COBOL to C++ using code he wrote himself. He got his Microbiology degree, got bored, and the USDOC payed for his PhD. in EE. Who said narcissists shouldn't brag?

By day i am what they call a 'Headhunter'. Been technical recruiting for 26+ years now. We specialize in Manufacturing. All this to say, i have YET to meet an EE thats from this planet.

I have had EE's steal relocation money from a client. One i placed at an electronics company claimed to be the next messiah (during a staff meeting, he was let go soon after). A different one accidently texted me about binge drinking, and and and and....and boy howdy do i got a books worth of stories!

When my clients call me now to help them with EE Automation jobs (PLC's etc) i gracefully decline the assignment.

ZERO of the above post is snarky, sarcastic or hyperbolic in any way.

My wife loves to watch those murder documentaries. Recently we watched that one about the Husband and Wife who had 13 kids as prisoners. Chained to their beds. One daughter got out and called the cops. The husband....you guessed it.....an Electrical Engineer!

I really do and try to avoid any and all stereotypes....but like i said, i've yet to meet an EE from planet earth!

@john_dennis & @Musicvid  With me now having at least 10 videos captured WITH Lagraith, do you have any Vegas Render Setting suggestions for me? I am not keen on re-capturing them. Just want to get those behind me, recover the drive space and move forward.

Hoping to do that this weekend.

Musicvid wrote on 1/14/2022, 3:36 PM

Yes, use 'em as-is with the suggested render template. They are the correct Display Aspect Ratio; although it is being misreported by MediaInfo, Vegas gets it right,

;?)

This is from an earlier response:

Now for the good news -- both files are the correct aspect! The .9091 PAR is being ignored by MediaInfo, so it defaults to 1.0 (3:2 DAR). Vegas reads the PAR correctly, so you you "could" go on as you have been. However, if I were you, I would go ahead and download the Grass Valley codecs (You want Grass Valley DV).

Again, i just want to wrap up this week with a heart full of thankfulness for all you, John (and others) have helped me with!

Lordsmurf… knowledgeable dude but should be taken with a grain of salt. I did purchase a TBC-1000 from him though. Funny how these things are so insanely overpriced in the used market. I also got a green AVT-8710 which I purchased more than 20 years ago. I may have to unload both of them soon.

OIC -- He gives you the diagnosis for free, and then sells you the cure, for $2250. I'd like to have a piece of that action!

(I think the ADVC300 is about $300 used on eBay, but of course they're "junk," right?)

Well, to be fair....TBC is not snake oil...and there only a few of those working Datavideo units still around.

In the land of Audio, the Fairchild compressor was built and sold in the 1960's. They sold originally for under 2 grand (if memory serves) there were only 800 or so made. Today, they are selling for 40,000-50,000.

Whether or not i absolutely 'NEED' quality TBC still confuses me...but i spent the money and dont worry about it now. Its one thing i check off 'the list'. I'll be able to sell it for what i have in it or a little less...which makes it a rental.

Now if he were selling special 'cables' that were just regular cables (ahem...Monster, i am looking at you) then yeah, its snake oil.

Do i feel like i over paid for the TBC? Sure. In the same way i'd feel i over paid for a Fairchild compressor.

What i got from LordSmurf was a tested/refurbed and fully working unit. It takes the guess work out of buying a 15+ year old widget. Thats worth it to me.

With ALL that said....i got a VCR/DVD combo on its way to me this week. I am gonna do a test of the same Xfr on my TBC system vs the Combo system. If i cant see a REAL difference between the two in Vegas...then my TBC setup is up for sale!

BTW, your vegas suggestion of the Unmask has CHANGED the way i render. MANY thanks for that simple trick. Again, i am not a full time video guy...not even part time, really. I have mucked with contrast and brightness settings with no real success. Just the medium setting of this Unmask easily hits the sweet spot. I edited a ton of videos over the weekend using the unshape plugin.

Musicvid wrote on 1/17/2022, 1:10 PM

The test is definitive and simple: Does your video lose horizontal sync (sideways tearing) or vertical sync (rolling)? If not, no TBC is necessary, nor would it improve "quality." If there is bad video sync, I usually don't bother with it, although I borrowed an ADVC (300?) once and it got the job done. Used to be, the sync pulse was your AC line frequency; now it is the camera's internal clock. Just a little tape edge ruffle, old age, or magnetic field exposure can cause it on analog tapes.

There is no criticism of your judgment. It is being led down the garden path to paying for expensive "cures" for which there is no illness that bothers me; in computer technology, video editing, pet care, alternative medicine, cosmetics, and psychiatry, to name but a few. It is different than retail upselling, bc the consumer is assumed to have committed to a purchase. If someone tries to shame or gaslight you into buying something that you didn't know you need, it's probably a racket. It is pervasive in our society (it is against the law in GB).

You are entirely welcome: it's called an unsharp mask, and low-block filters are a trick from the earliest days of scanning and Photoshop.

WHAT you are referring to is commonly known as price gouging. I had no idea it was illegal in GB. In the states its celebrated as part of good ole Capitalism. The ONLY thing that i am aware of that is illegal is when gas stations jack their prices up during a natural disaster when the actual price per barrel is not changed. Outside of that, drop your drawers and take the hit (insert Team America theme song here)

I DO appreciate the video examples you have shared. Truth be told i have not tried transferring video without this TBC rig, so i have no idea if any of that video spinning is happening with my tapes.

WHILE i have your attention, can you look at this short clip for me? Its a VHS transfer. Tape is probably from 1999. Transfers BEFORE this one transferred fine. The one tape AFTER this transfer did a fine job too. This tells me there is something wrong with either the original taping or the tape mechanism. It jerks in a nearly predictable pattern (like a shopping cart wheel with a hardened piece of gum on it). Any ideas on what this is? Cant it be fixed?

It was captured through the TBC rig i have. This is uncompressed video. I'd love your input. I may be stuck with this in the end...i am just hoping there is something i can do to stop the jerking.

Also, here are pictures of my Pinnacle gadget. It appears to have a digital video input of some type...but the back only has USB out.

Musicvid wrote on 1/17/2022, 2:04 PM

No, price gouging is capitalizing on a shortage or crisis for unearned profit. Gaslighting is making someone believe they are crazy or incompetent for not conforming to your wishes. It was a book and a movie, popular in the 1940s.

Denicio wrote on 9/10/2022, 3:23 PM

MANY of you commented here and i wanted to revisit this as MANY things have changed (AND i need your help).

Musicvid, John Dennis and others have been SO helpful.

I have ditched the LordSmurf system (sold it and actually made a small bit of $ back on the deal).

I am NOW transferring my VHS videos to DVD via a Toshiba DVR620KU. Its something similar to what Musicvid suggested. Its set & forget easy. May not be Hollywood quality but these are grainy home videos for the most part.

SO, when i copy the finalized DVD over to my windows computer and i drag it into vegas....what render settings should i be using? I have 30 videos ready to be rendered and MANY MORE transferring to DVD. Vegas Pro 12 (what i am using) has a wealth of render settings. Can you fine folks give me suggestions? Again, just VHS camcorder capture from a 1980's camcorder being transferred by the VCR/DVD Recorder combo. It is what it is.

What render settings do you recommend?

Thanks in advance to your suggestions.

Denicio

Back to square 1.

What is on your DVD:

PAL or NTSC?

4:3 or 16:9?

Upper or Lower Field Order?

If you don't know the answer, upload a short .vob to Drive or Dropbox.

Once again, you will find the required file properties by following this link.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

As always, glad to help when given sufficient information...😶

Denicio wrote on 9/10/2022, 4:07 PM

DVD will have to be NTSC due to being in the United States.

Other questions i am simply unqualified to answer. If i dropbox or google drive it, how will you get access to it?

Happy to do it but i've only done it with known email addresses. I mainly use WeTransfer with my audio clients.

Denicio wrote on 9/10/2022, 4:15 PM

See if this helps....

Musicvid wrote on 9/10/2022, 4:32 PM

Upload a sample VOB to Drive or Dropbox, and kindly share the link here.

Your recorder "appears" to be set at 1/2 horizontal resolution, which is not ideal. See if you can change that to Full Storage Resolution, which is 720x480 or 704x480.

Begin reading about SAR, DAR, and PAR. You will need it in the next step of your discovery process.

If you recorded at a slower speed/more content on a disk setting, that might be why the resolution is so low.
