Using Voukoder with 4 K footage.

Werner_NOR wrote on 6/17/2021, 11:35 AM

It was suggested in one of the other posts to use voukoder if I should render 4K mp4 footage to 1920x1080 for better and crisper results. I have installed voukoder, but would like some help with the rendering settings as I find it difficult myself.

Can anyone suggest best settings if I want to render out 4K to 4K (mp4) using Voukoder.

Alternatively 4K footage to 1920 x 1080 (mp4).

Thanks in advance.

Generally the x264 (avc) and x265 (hevc) codecs in voukoder give the highest quality but run more slowly than the gpu accelerated ones. They can also give you 10-bit avc which gpu's don't do. I haven't tested the non-accelerated ones in voukoder yet but they lifted those codecs from ffmpeg which I have tested.

If you want the best settings for voukoder accelerated amd, nvidia, and intel hardware, see the links in my signature. All the measurements are 4K to 4K but I imagine the relative rankings for 4K to HD would be similar. In the chart, just drill down to voukoder and sort on vmaf (which I think is the truest). Then hover over the notes entries to see the descriptive summary that I cut and pasted from the voukoder presets. Unfortunately voukoder doesn't let you paste them back in but you can paste them into notepad and manipulate their preset till the descriptive summary at the bottom matches.

Thanks for quick reply. I will look into it - learning something new ...

Stick with the Voukoder presets. They are time tested and descriptive. If you want a little better quality and larger file, set CRF 20 instead of 23 (default).

10 bit AVC is really not a "thing" for production because Hi10p Profile is obsolete and mostly unsupported as a delivery format. It was replaced by HEVC/h265..

+1

For 4k to FHD render with Voukoder, just set project settings to FHD before starting the render. The template stays the same, it's one size fits them all.

You can also add a filter in Voukoder to scale to 1080p but it's a little slow.

Here is a couple of wildlife shorts I shot earlier this week, an elk and a deer. Both handheld with Panasonic 4K and rendering with VP18 and VouKoder. The links are to my onedrive:
