OT: URL of DropBox images

PeterDuke schrieb am 12.11.2014 um 08:22 Uhr
I tried pasting some DropBox images into a forum post the other day, but neither images nor text showed. The URL of one image is https://www.dropbox.com/s/k35unwourgqaabt/V9%20none.jpg?dl=0

Kimberly suggested that I delete the s in https, but that didn't help.

Some URLs recently posted by others are:

http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20371960/SONY/Sony%20Forum/good%20frame%20privacy.jpg

http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21489814/Vegas-Pro-13-rename-crash.png

http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/40618156/2015-02-15%20Windows%2010/File%20Conflicts.png

They all start "http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/" whereas mine starts "https://www.dropbox.com/s/". Is this the problem? I have tried generating the URL in my PC dropbox folder and also online in my dropbox account, but it is the same.

What am I doing wrong?

You mean like this? You need to add HTML markup to the link. You need to put [/img] following your link. The sticky at the top of the page describes this.

Gary, I'm having the same problem as Peter. In fact, I have a 2012 post that originally displayed two of my dropbox images fine, but now they don't display. They both have the HTML markup you refer to. But similar to Peter's mine start with "https://www.dropbox.com/s/" which is the only linking option I am seeing in dropbox. I've removed the "s" to give "http://www.dropbox.com/s/" but still no cigar.

Jerry,

First off you need to drop the ?dl=0 from the link. This is a Dropbox command that tells Dropbox how to process the link. If you had ?dl=1 at the end of the link, this tells Dropbox to start Downloading the file, rather than opening it. The Vegas forums don't understand the Dropbox link extensions. Next, remove the "s" from https: to make it http: And make sure that you have your image located in the Dropbox Public folder, or a folder under the Public folder. Lastly, Dropbox does have a nasty punishment policy if your link generates to much traffic. If you exceed your daily bandwidth limit of 20GB, they disable all your Public links for 72 hours.

I now have

"[ img = " (without the spaces and quotes)

followed by (all on one line without spaces)

http://www.dropbox.com/s/k35unwourgqaabt/V9%20none.jpg]

but still nothing.

Exact syntax is in the code block that follows:

Yes John, precisely what I said at the outset: Most people seem to get a URL with dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/, that works, but Jerry and I get www.dropbox.com/s/, that doesn't work.
PeterDuke schrieb am 12.11.2014 um 22:59 Uhr
Gary, what do you mean by Public Folder?

I have my files in the top folder where the Getting Started.pdf file is located.
Gary James schrieb am 12.11.2014 um 23:04 Uhr
Are you using the Dropbox folder context menu selection to get the Public Link?

Here is the line above that shows the Dropbox hosted image: Again, I had to add a space between the g and = or it would simply show the image inside the code block.

Let's try something else:

(1) Can others see my image if they paste the URL in my first post into their browser?

(2) If yes, can they post that link such that my image appears in this thread?

Gary James schrieb am 12.11.2014 um 23:10 Uhr
YES. the URL

https://www.dropbox.com/s/k35unwourgqaabt/V9%20none.jpg

brings up what looks like a blank white record album,

Let's see what happens if I try to embed an image with your URL;

><

AAHA ... now I see nothing. Yes, it's that link that the Vegas forum doesn't understand. You need the dropboxusercontent link.

Sorry Gary, we cross posted.

I don't see your menu. How do you get it?

When I first log into dropbox, its URL is https://www.dropbox.com/home

I see my files and a folder that I have uploaded (dropped)

I see a column on the left which contains the following options (with icons):
Files
Photos
Sharing
Links
Events
Get Started

I click on Links, and the URL changes to https://www.dropbox.com/links/your_links

I right-click on my image file, and the menu says

Open link in new tab
Open link in new window
Open link in incognito window
Save link as ...
Copy link address
etc.

I click on Copy link address, and paste into whatever.

I hate be the bearer of bad news but I've had problems accessing dropbox.com on Internet Explorer 10 on one machine. Maybe it's some coprorate security problem or maybe it's a dropbox.com issue. Many machines still work as normal. Dropbox probably has lots of customer-facing servers to get their work done.

On this machine I can see the links even though I can't access my dropbox.

I am using Google Chrome on Windows XP.

Google Chrome on Windows XP works for me.

"what do you mean by Public Folder?"

PeterDuke schrieb am 13.11.2014 um 00:15 Uhr
I don't have the Photos and Public folders. I only have Getting Started.pdf and the folder and files that I put there. Everything else looks the same.

Your base URL is different to mine, as I have pointed out before.
Gary James schrieb am 13.11.2014 um 00:18 Uhr
Sorry Gary, we cross posted. I don't see your menu. How do you get it?

When I installed Dropbox, it created a Virtual Folder in my named User directory called Dropbox. To upload any files from my PC to the Dropbox server all I have to do is drag or copy files to the Dropbox Folder and they're automatically uploaded to the server. The install also created a System Tray Icon for the Dropbox folder that has links to open either the local folder or my account on Dropbox.

The context menu item I showed in the graphic for getting the Public link, is an addition to the regular context menu you see by right-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer. I just right-clicked on the image located in a folder under the Dropbox Public folder, selected the Copy Public Link menu item, and the link was placed on the clipboard.

My Local Dropbox folder that syncs to the Dropbox Server

It seems that I have a different Dropbox to most people. The Dropbox URL is different and there is no Public folder.

That's it vkmast. I just moved my dropbox Vegas folder to the Public folder and now I get links that work. Thanks all.

Jerry

Did you have to create your Public folder or was it already there?

It looks like I might have to pay for an upgrade to get it.
farss schrieb am 13.11.2014 um 23:55 Uhr
Your Dropbox public folder should have been created during installation.

Bob.

Bob

See vkmast's post. Public folders are no longer created with new accounts.

>Did you have to create your Public folder or was it already there?

Mine is an old account so it was already there. What is interesting to me is when I created my 2012 post here with links to two images not under public they worked fine. Then, at some point dropbox (or SCS?) changed and my links no longer resolved until I relocated to public and relinked.
