I have not the plain Movie Studio version with buildnr. 108, but the Platinum version.
So I don't know if there comes a second screen after you choose for Save it to my harddrive, which I get, see this

From your words I understand that your program freezes af that first click on Save it to....
Is that right or did you get a second screen?
If so, can you give a sreenshot of it?

@Steve Grisetti
Steve, I don't see that. I see that his system uses the sytem location of  C:\WINDOWS\system32.
That's the same with me and I think that's the case for all the W10 users.

@j-v I do not make it to the second screen. As soon as I click Save to My Hard Drive, that is when my cursor spins for a moment as in its trying to load and then Vegas Movie Studio closes out.

j-v wrote on 3/14/2019, 9:23 AM

OK, Thank you for the info.

If it is not only this project but also when you try a short other project we begin to seek what the problem may be.
- As a first step I will ask you to reset VMS to his original beginning on your computer and I hope you could somewhere save this project that gives the troubles.
- To reset the program you have to start VMS 16 with hold Ctrl-Shift buttons on your keyboard and than doubleclick the starting pic of VMS16. Choose for "delete all cached files" and continue.
- Now first try a litle "render to" with a simpel videofile on your timeline and when it is going well you can start your "problem" vf.

I like to hear from you again what the results are.

Elijah-Thomas wrote on 3/14/2019, 9:56 AM

@j-v Okay, it will be later today once I get home from work until I can try your suggestions but I will let you know the results. I will mention, I just downloaded and installed VMS for the first time a couple days ago and this is my first and only project I have created so far.

I didn't think to simply try another new small sample project though to see if I get the same issue. I will try that first for sure.

vkmast wrote on 3/14/2019, 10:40 AM

Have you tested this with a shorter/smaller file? I did not have trouble with VMStudio 16 build 108. Doing what you tried it "made movie" of a GoPro5Black 116MB sample file and saved it to hd. I was also able to use Advanced options (Save it to hd), Magix AVC MP4 Internet 4K2160p25 (Intel QSV) with success. OS 1803 (17134) here, not 1809 as with the OP. And you need to get to Advanced (as in @j-v's screenshot) to see Render settings.

Elijah-Thomas wrote on 3/14/2019, 10:45 AM

@vkmast I have not tested with another smaller file yet but I will later today once I get the chance. I already mentioned that. It closes as soon as I click Save to My Hard Drive, so I never have the opportunity of getting to the second screen to view the Render Settings through Advanced Options, I already mentioned that as well.

vkmast wrote on 3/14/2019, 12:07 PM

Sorry, I missed your last but one comment. My mentioning how to get to see render settings was in answer to your question in the original post. I saw only Advanced options mentioned before.

Elijah-Thomas wrote on 3/14/2019, 1:28 PM

So I justed created a new project and added a small sample file and tried to choose the Save to My Hard Drive option and it closes right away. Tested again with the Upload to YouTube option, same results.

I will try the suggestion of resetting VMS program and deleting all cache files. I was able to successfully save my project to my desktop and it is saved as the .vf file. Since it is saved on my computer, I should be able to open that back up after resetting VMS right? I don't want to lose that project.

I held down ctrl + shift and clicked to launch VMS, it just launches as normal. I do not see an option to "delete all cached files"

j-v wrote on 3/14/2019, 1:42 PM

That is no problem, but to be 100% sure, you can copy it also to a removable location and keep that seperated from your computer, like an usb stick. Normally it is only a small file. Therefore it is not needed to copy it with media unless you are planning also to remove all your used videofiles.

Okay, I tried your suggestion of holding both ctrl and the shift key and then clicking on the VMS icon to launch it. It just opens up the normal way. I never see an option to Delete All Cache Files.

Elijah-Thomas wrote on 3/14/2019, 2:09 PM

Okay thanks, I got it that time. I chose the option to Delete Cache as well and clicked continue. Tried the option again Make Movie > Save to My Hard Drive, it still closes then.

j-v wrote on 3/14/2019, 5:44 PM

Now it is getting more difficult because I tested it on my laptop with my plain VMS 16 build 108 and found nothing wrong there, also when my source location is a removable one and writing to the same with your settings of Make Movie never fails.
There are a few questions about the info you gave in your OP.

MediaInfo Report for your source footage :General
Complete name                            : C:\Users\elith\Desktop\Redfishbayouchico2.vf
File size                                : 69.3 KiB

A vf is a projectfile and can never be a sourcefile in this program.

VEGAS Pro File Properties for your source footage :General
  Name: GOPR0527.MP4
  Folder: C:\Users\elith\Pictures\GoPro\2019-03-10\HERO5 Black 2

You are putting video's in your Windows default location for pictures?
What is the kind of Harddrive on wich is your :/C?
Do you have other storage locations or partitions on your hardware?

Render Settings : I am not sure where to go to check these settings within Vegas Movie Studio 16.

Normal in the second screen after "Make Movie" you get this option to see them

But that screen you can't reach, so it looks impossible.
The only thing you can do for now is when it ís possible to set in the menu Options/Preferences your settings for the temp. files to a location with at least 2 x the total size of your expected files size after rendering.

Okay guys I finally figured it out. I got desperate and upgraded to the Platinum version. The same issue occurred though. But, with Platinum, you have way more options to choose from when going to Options > Preferences.

There was an option talking about encoding with QSV under the General tab. I disabled that option. I was able to Make Movie and select Save to My Hard Drive and proceed to the next steps and export without any issues.

Luckily, I was already considering upgrading. But for some others, this may not be an option. It kinda sucks that you have to upgrade in order to fix crashing problems.

EricLNZ wrote on 3/14/2019, 6:17 PM

Is the same QSV option not available in the Basic version under Options\Preferences\General? Unfortunately I don't have the basic version so cannot check.

@Elijah-Thomas that is interesting. I don't have QSV available in my CPU i7-6800K, and having this checked does not prevent me from getting to 'Save it to my hard drive'. Your CPU i7-7700T does support QSV and it appears to be getting blocked, strange.

I'm not familiar enough, but is there a way to turn off QSV at the CPU level?

There was an option talking about encoding with QSV under the General tab. I disabled that option.

Then you found yourself the solution for your problem, but now you can't use the special options of version 16 to use faster rendertimes with help of your only present GPU of your Intell processor the Intel 630 GPU you have now switched off.
If it does not troubles your way of working let it be, but with me with an older driver version it works perfect with 8-9 times faster renders.

My driver version that works excelent for that option is: 23.20.16.4849
