Aspect ratio while previewing

I am a total newbie to video editing, so my questions are really simple. On the other hand, I've not been able to find answers very easily, so here I am. Hoping someone can help:

1) My camcorder is a Canon FS200 which shoots in standard definition. When I created my first Vegas project, I used the feature that analyses a sample video clip to set up the project properties correctly. Only now, the image (which the camcorder records in wide-screen format) shows in the preview windows NOT in wide-screen format. The image is scrunched vertically. So my question (before I spend a ton of time on my 45 minute wedding video) is: Does the image look like way in the project monitor only, or will it actually render that way?

2) Can anyone share a link that explains in layman's terms what all these acronyms stand for (HDV and all the others)? I've checked my Canon manual, and I can't even seem to find an answer to that simple question so as to set up my own project properties.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate any input you can provide.

Paul

Sound,
1. In Project media window, right-click the 'clip(s)' and in Projecties... change Pixel aspect ratio to NTSC (or PAL if you're in a PAL land) Widescreen. Project properties template to NTSC/PAL DV Widescreen. But if you have SD Copy free software (*.mod > *.mpg), you should be able to set the widescreen flag right there. I did this all the time with a similar Canon FS100 SD camcorder.
2. Wikipedia ?
