Black pixelation after cutting/cropping video.

Matt1989 wrote on 3/21/2017, 5:42 PM

Can anyone tell me why my video is black in the beginning, and after cuts?

I've looked everywhere, and can't find anything.

Here's the video:

It happens after everytime I make a cut, like I've interrupted the video, and supersampling can't keep up.

Musicvid wrote on 3/21/2017, 10:50 PM

Supersampling? Should be never used unless you're doing something totally weird...

It really looks like you've got cuts without new i-frames, but I've never seen that in Vegas, ever.

Start here instead:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Matt1989 wrote on 3/22/2017, 3:14 PM

I was told I had super sampling on, but after looking into it a little more, apparently when I toggled "disable resample", that got rid of the supersampling on the project. So at this point I've no idea what could be making it black out before it comes into focus. Honestly I'm a moron and it would take me weeks to understand MediaInfo and how to use it, would rather keep googling and troubleshooting, although it seems my problem is unique, so of course no one knows anything about it. Lol.

Anyways, I'll try to get this MediaInfo thing figured out in the interim while I google. Hopefully I can find a fix for this. I'll update this later.

Is it the artifacts at the start of the video you're talking about?

Musicvid wrote on 3/23/2017, 10:21 AM

And what application was used to capture the video?

Normally we would expect to see the Writing Application in the MediaInfo.

Matt1989 wrote on 3/23/2017, 2:04 PM

Yes it's the artifacts I'm asking about HappyFriar.

Using Sony Vegas Pro 14, and OBS to record the footage with.

Musicvid wrote on 3/23/2017, 3:45 PM

What other renderers are available to you in obs ?

Another thing to try is run your mp4 through Quickstream Fix inside VideoRedo. There is a free trial.

Matt1989 wrote on 3/23/2017, 3:50 PM

I'm using Direct3D 11, OpenGL is the only other option, for my setup I was warned against it, but really don't know the differences between the two

vjsouza wrote on 3/23/2017, 4:22 PM

I have the ultimate solution for your problem. You MUST quantize to frames all your project. Go to Options menu, hold down shift key and clik in Preferences. Now will appear a new (and very ultra secret) tab called Internal. Search for Quantize and set to YES the tho questions. Restart Vegas and be happy!

Those happen in Vegas too or just when you render? The only thing that comes to my mind is compression artifacts, like the compression is to high (ie lower bitrates) on the render or original footage. I've seen it on low bitrate mpeg1/2 stuff too when doing drastic scene changes..

If it's your render only, try upping either the bitrate on the render, lower the res (which will give more bandwidth per frame), or, if it's a variable bitrate, raise the lowest & average bitrates.

This just highlights the end of unquantized events in red. It is a useful setting, but the actual setting to quantize to frames is the first item in the Options menu. It's unlikely to be the cause of the issue in this post.

@Matt1989 Make sure you're using the latest version of OBS Studio. What settings did you use on it's "Output" menu?

...For how long am I expected to look at this stuff I totally hate to see?*

Please create a short version and screenshots of a couple of magnified problematic portions of the timeline.

~ ~ ~

First, you have fades on your cuts. I don't know how & why.

Second, you don't have gray "limiting" track underneath hence your RGB levels drop below the 16 crashpoint all the way down to 0.

Encoded in AVC and uploaded to web service this "levels breach" delivers an artifact-like effect.

Remember: Vegas has got "black hole", compositing-wise, under the lowest track that can not be limited by Curves or Levels FX to 16 RGB !
Watch out for transparencies in your videos!
Consider building a "terminating gray track" as the bottom of your project if you work extensively with transparencies!

JamOne sorry I'm new to Vegas, just switched over from movie maker. Not sure what a grey track is, I put the fades in the cover up the artifacts at the beginning of the cuts.

HappyFriar it does it in Vegas not just in the render.

Nick Hope I have the latest version of OBS, and what specifically about the output options did you want to know?

NickHope wrote on 3/25/2017, 11:32 PM

Not sure what a grey track is...

See section 3 here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-why-does-my-video-have-more-contrast-than-the-vegas-preview--104567/

Personally I've never seen the lack of such a grey track cause the problems in your video. If sub-RGB16 levels routinely caused such an artifact on web video then we'd be seeing a lot more of them. But it's a good habit to add the dark grey track.

Nick Hope I have the latest version of OBS, and what specifically about the output options did you want to know?

  • Output Mode ("Simple" works for me)
  • Recording Quality ("High Quality, Medium File Size" works for me)
  • Recording Format ("mp4" works for me)
  • (Recording) Encoder ("Software (x264)" works for me)
john_dennis wrote on 3/26/2017, 3:35 AM

I was wondering how one could record the OBS settings with OBS. I found the answer is to record on one machine and display the settings of another machine through a Remote Desktop session.

Could you post the original clip so other can try? Maybe it's a codec issue with Vegas (ie one built in).

Ignore the haters. Another Vegas editor is a big + in my book. :)

Jam_One wrote on 3/27/2017, 3:32 PM

It's my turn to be uncertain now :-) ...So... Are there fades?

Do your cuts look something like this? --->

If "No" then discard everything below.

If "Yes" then:
1) Please make sure the Blending/Compositing mode of the Track is set to "Source Alpha", and
2) Try creating the RGB 16;16;16 track as the bottommost of the project as is described in Nick Hope's post (his posts are treasures, by the way).

If that does not do the trick, then expect to have to shed a light on the plugins you used in your project.

Matt1989 wrote on 3/27/2017, 5:10 PM

I don't use plugins, just whatever comes with Sony Vegas Pro 14, it defaults using EQ, Compressor, and Noise Gate, but that's all.

I have tried to make fades before and after the cuts to soften the affect of the artifacts on the viewers eyes, but it does it regardless of whether I have fades or not. I'm trying to use the advice I've gotten so far to see if it works, I've included my OBS settings for recording,

HappyFriar, I'm not sure what you mean by original clip.

Just used the dark gray bar from media generators, and I'm still seeing issues when I make cuts. I have no fades in the new video I'm editing, and I haven't added any plugins. Never had this issue in MovieMaker, and I see it most around cuts, or when I click on a random spot on the video timeline, like it can't load the entire frame. Adding the gray bar so far hasn't made any noticeable difference.

john_dennis wrote on 3/27/2017, 7:15 PM

"I've included my OBS settings for recording"

Your OBS recording settings are spread across multiple pages Stream, Output, Audio, Video and Advanced. (See my video above.) You've only shown the General page.

Matt1989 wrote on 3/27/2017, 7:42 PM

Not sure why it posted the general settings. Don't remember taking a screenshot of that page. Anyways, here's the output settings.
