The US uses 60 Hz power and hence 30 fps TV whereas Europe uses 50 Hz power and 25 fps TV. Most PAL equipment will play NTSC but not vice versa.

Since there is no notion of PAL or NTSC in the HD 1080i/p world, what would stop a DVDA authored blu-ray disc play fine in Canada but not Down Under?

Disc was authored with 'All regions'.

Or put another way - what project settings in Vegas 10/11 & DVDA would I need to use so that a blu-ray disc I create here (Canada) will play in Australia?

Any insight anyone?

TIA,
Tom

I think you will be quite safe. Australian gear usually plays both 25/50 and 30/60 fps based videos.

Thanks Peter...

I mailed two different versions to my nephew and on his SONY BDP-S370 (with NO updates to firmware since purchase) he gets a 'Cannot operate this disc' message - same on other nephew's PS3.

Frankly, I am at a loss to know how to test. At least one of those played fine here on my SONY BDP-S360.

Would 24p work or would it better at 25i??

Hmmm...

I have only one commercial Blu-ray disc "Earth", which is labeled "Playstation 3 compatible", making me wonder whether some BDs are not compatible with PS3. It is 23.976 fps progressive.

You say 25i (frames per second) but people usually say 50i (fields per second) on these forums although Wiki deprecates that useage. Anyway, I'll use the latter.

The only other BDs that I have played on my Panasonic DMR-BW500 are BD-R and BD-RE that have been burnt at 50i. I haven't tried 60i.

The specs in the manual don't mention frame or field rate for BD but does say that playable discs can be:
BD-RE: 2X speed (vers 2.1)
BD-R: 2X speed LTH type (Vers 1.2), 2X speed (Vers 1.1), 4X speed (Vers 1.2)

What speed rating were the discs you burnt?

The setup menu of my BD player (actually recorder/player) allows the HDMI connection to be set to "automatic" as well as some fixed settings including 1080i and 1080p. There is no mention of field or frame rate. Choices of PAL versus NTSC are available elsewhere in other menus, so I think that it is fully compatible with both 50Hz and 60Hz systems.

Interesting Peter ...

On my player, I can play a BD-RE and even a DVD burned at 24p (23.976). The one at 25.000 won't play and goes back to the OSD - shows the disc as BDMV, but won't play it. PowerDVD will play both.

DVDA only has four choices for frame rate - 29.970, 24.000. 25.000 and 23.976.

I suspect the BD I sent was using 25.000.

Will do some more research ... thanks for your input.
