Can not get install disc to populate the CD-ROM and show the .exe file

Hi, I'm a new user and just got Movie Studio Platinum 14 for Christmas. It was given to me as a boxed disc, not as downloadable content. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium (Service Pack 1). I'm not sure what the "tips for quick responses" means my hardware setup. I have 2 internal hard-drives, 2 external, and a CD-ROM drive (if that's what they meant).

The issue I'm having is that I'm trying to install the program, using the disc install, and the CD-ROM player will not recognize it or run it. The directions said to insert the program disc into the drive and that it should start automatically-- It didn't. The disc starts to spin and the green indicator light just below the CD-ROM tray-drawer flashes for about 10 seconds, but then it stops and the disc stops spinning.

The directions then go on to say that if it doesn't install automatically, follow these steps (I'll describe below) to manually start the installation-- Still hasn't worked. I'll take you through my process and tell you what happened:

1. With the disc already in the drive, I open up "Windows Explorer" (really the same thing as "My Computer"), and click the drive letter of my CD/DVD-ROM drive. Nothing happens except the the CD-ROM drive letter (in the open section to the right) highlights in blue.

2. Note that the tree menu of drives down the left column, never displays my CD-ROM drive letter, so there's no place to double click there. My only other choice is to double click the drive letter icon to the right.

3. As soon I do so, the disc ejects from the CD-ROM slot, and a message box comes up on the "My Computer" drive icon screen that reads, "Insert a disc. Please insert a disc into drive D:. (Help me choose a disc)"

4. In the lower right hand corner of the message box is a cancel button. If I don't press it (and leave the message box on the screen), and re-insert the disc, it repeats the process of the disc spinning, and the green CD-ROM indicator light on my computer tower flashing for about 10 seconds, before turning off, and then doing nothing. But an hour glass icon remains as my mouse pointer, so apparently it thinks it's trying to do something, but it's really not doing anything at all.

5. If I do press the cancel button in the message screen, and re-insert the disc but yet again, it again repeats the process of green light flashing, disc spinning, but then stopping after 10 seconds, light goes dark, disc doesn't do anything further.

I'm stuck in a vicious cycle here, don't know what to do next. I knew I should have asked for this as a download, but it was a Christmas present, and the giver wanted to present to me something tangible. I should have known that in this day & age, everyone uses DLC, and disc was probably not the way to go.

What do you suggest I do now? If I got a registration code in the box, along with the disc, is there any way to go on the Vegas website, download the program, and supply the reg-code online, without having to purchase online and pay for a second copy?

Thank you for your time,

-- John

John, go to the Magix site and download the trial for Movie Studio 14 Platinum. It's the full version and activate it with your registration key.

You may not get all the extras that are on your disc though? With problem discs one suggestion is to copy the disc to your hard drive, find the appropriate setup file and activate it. From your comments it's possible you may have a faulty disc.

It looks as your disk is corrupted

You can try however to read it in another drive, and if OK, duplicate it.

Go to https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-movie-studio-faqs--106024/ and read it. Then go to the following comment and click Downloading shortcut there. The page that opens has the answers you really need.

I'm happy to report that I found out the problem, and came up with an eventual solution. The problem wasn't with the disc, but rather my CD/DVD-ROM drive. It plays CD's but won't recognize DVD's-- something I didn't realize until I tried a process of elimination with multiple movie DVD's, music CD's, game installer discs, etc; and figured out what the pattern was.

This apparently happened after I had to replace my OS last year. Somewhere on a computer forum someone said that altering the OS on the hard drive can sometimes prevent the ROM-drive from playing certain types of media. I guess I didn't think about that, until just now... but awhile back, it used to play both just fine.

I researched how I might fix the problem, and I saw advice on everything from updating drivers, to uninstalling the ROM from the list of devices, to altering the registry codes. Nothing worked. So I just broke down and bought an external CD/DVD-ROM drive (drive F).. and it works just fine. The 28 some-odd dollars I spent on the ext. drive is probably cheaper than what it would have cost to bring my computer into a tech shop, to figure out how to get the internal ROM drive (drive D) working again... so that's okay. I'm satisfied with the end result.

It recognizes the Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 14 DVD install disc just fine now, and I can proceed forward as I originally intended.
