Can't even get started - import error

I am about as new as one can get to this.

running win 10, trying to import AVI files from my handheld video camera SD card.
Receive codec error when trying to import a single file to play around with it.
Also receive same error when trying to import straight from video folder on laptop.

I have loads of these AVI files as well as some older stuff I'd like to archive to DVD so I can play on a good old DVD player. I've backed up my raw video clips, but I'd like to render them as movies and burn to DVD for family movie archival.

There are as many flavors of AVI as there are jelly beans in a five gallon jar.
Open-source formats require separate codecs to open in Vegas.
So use MediaInfo from Sourceforge to tell us what' inside, and we will point you to the appropriate resource

I am a newbie here... are you saying to go to Sourceforge and download mediainfo? I checked and people on there are saying it's got a bunch of malware/bloat on it.
I can tell you that it is this video camera: POLAROID DVC-00725F 720P HD Camcorder I did find the cd for the software so I will check to see if it is compatible with win 10. it does mention a codec on the CD.

on the software disc, there is a menu option for the codec install. and it is referred to as ffdshow codec. is that helpful? it's old, so I don't know if I should try to install the software or the codec? looking for advice. we're talking 2008 old.

There is also arcsoft media converter 2.5 that was packaged on there... i took a gamble and installed it and appears to be functional, but I have stopped short of trying to import a file to mess with as I am not sure what to do with it at this point.

I would not install ffdshow on my computer.

The only one you need is the x264vfw codec from Sourceforge.
It installs as a system codec, and is available as a custom renderer in the AVI video dialog.

I will attempt this tomorrow. Please accept my sincere gratitude in averting panic attacks trying to get these things archived properly.
